Tape jammed, clicking but no functions

Sony PDVM-40N tape is jammed. Tape is locked in machine - power will not shot off, clicking every 2-3 seconds, occasionally flashing lights. Is there some why to release the locking mechanism and get the tape out? Or is that just asking for trouble?
