    there are various things to try
    1) check cabling to hard disk the broad cable that goes in the back must have the stripe on it next to the 4 pin power plug
    2) the hard drive must be set for primary. At the back of the hard drive is a small section that has 6 or 8 pins in it either written on the hard drive is instructions where to set up for primary or by the pins themselves is three codes
    pr =primary
    sl = slave
    cs = cable select.
    3) go into the BIOS and set it to automatically detect hard drives
    Please let me know how it goes

    You may need to reset BIOS back to default settings
    if you can get into bios check which key to press for default or reset the bios this way
    On the M/board will be written somewhere reset bios or words to that effect it should be a small 2 pin connector with a jumper on 2 pin with computer off connect the jumper across both pins for 30 seconds then remove jumper fit back over 2 pin (not Lose) restart computer.
    One last thing Did you have the maker O/S installed vista if you did and are trying to install another operating system you must use a full version not an upgrade one as the vista has taken over some instruction in bios

    I meant vista has set you hard disk boot sector so its not recognized you must use full version of operating system to overcome this

    Did you have vista installed at some time B4 as I had this problem when I took vista off and went to install a upgrade version of XP I had to use a full version to overcome vista writing to boot sector of hard drive
    Download (Hirens Boot Disk) or (ERD Commander)
    1) the boot disk contains a lot of recover programs to use from DOS including repair boot sector and reset BIOS
    2) ERD commander boots the same as windows and allows you to try to repair your operating system
    With both you will have to read any instructions carefully.
    Have used both on occasions to repair and fix things

Have a compact persiro f700 and am getting a message that states that SMART disk failure and windows will not load and cannot boot computer into safe mode Please Advise on what to do next?????

Hi,
You could open the bios set up to check the hardisk and memory card, see if it is being read by the board.
Try to set your boot sequence to "default option" and save the changes. reboot again afterwards.
If there is a rebooting, but still can not read the hardisk, it means, that is a hardware breakdown, mainly the hardisk itself. Try to replace the HD( hardisk) if you have any spare ones, just to check the system.

Your local computer shop can assess it and tell you what causes the problem. we are just advising you if you could repair it by yourself and my pointers to what you are going to repair in your laptop.
Hope that helps you out.
Thanks for using FixYa!

By startup fails to see IDE 0 and IDE 2 , says no channel 0 and channel 1. Is it possible that the cmos battery is empty?

Once your powered on the CMOS battery is no longer an issue. If it isn't reading the IDE or SATA channels it could be because they are not set in the BIOS. Check your BIOS setting and double check your cable connections. You also need to make sure, for IDE devices, that one of the drives is set to Master and the other to Slave otherwise they confuse the board and cancel each other out.

If you are attempting to boot from a hard disk that was from another computer you will have problems because of architectural differences. You would need to place it into an identical pc build. You can install a new operating system then read the disk as an external or secondary drive, or do a new install from CD onto the same disk.

Do you recognize this file? As I recall this it the default directory for websites created in MS Front Page and possibly others. Since the file is not loading you can simply remove the reference to it from the startup items. Start> Run msconfig in XP or Msconfig in the search on Vista then goto the startup tab. You can safely uncheck items you do not wish to load on startup.

Will not go beyond the boot screen at startup, pressing F2 or F12 does not respond

2 ways to try
1) Boot in safe mode F8 key while booting. if possible right click C:\ properties tools open error check tick small box to fix errors and reboot Windows on reboot will check disk for errors and fix them then restart.
2) Reinstall windows in repair mode
After all drivers etc loaded windows will ask what you want to do install, repair etc press R key for repair and follow instructions
