Hi.
Your machine comes standard with 24 department buttons on the keyboard, and PLUs by memory location. It is hard to explain simply, but the basic idea is that a department is designed as a category key, and a PLU (Price Look Up) is designed for specific items with an attached price. As your machine has a pricing function for departments, you really don't need PLUs on such a simple machine.
What I'm really saying is the keyboard has departments on it which can be set with a name and price so that they can be one touch buttons to bring up name and price with a touch, or you can have them open price (where an item has no preset price, so you type the price each time). If you need a lot more than 24 item buttons, you will have to do the rest by code numbers, as this is only a basic machine.
Just let me know how many items you wish to enter into it, and I'll tell you how to program it.

The tables you are referring to with a+b=c etc. are the machine features, or system programming. These are the important settings that tell the machine what things to print, how the function keys will operate, security settings etc. These are mainly for us dealers, as they are written in tech speak as you can see. I don't recommend changing any of them unless you need to, as you can get into a mess. If you tell me anything that doesn't work how you would like, I can help you to set the machine features where necessary.

I just want to enter the price of each item and apply the tax. Can I do this without the Dept number.

No. The register must log each type of item as some have different taxes which can be applied. Also, your daily report couldn't give detail. You must use a department or PLU in order to link tax to it.

I have lost the ability to ring in cash entry's on the numeric keypad

You cannot enter amounts without a PLU or Department. The machine must be told the type of product you are selling. Also, never use a decimal point to enter prices

Setting new price for plu

Using the 'P' key, 'C' key turn the key to the PROG position, PRESS the 0 (zero) key and then 0 (zero). At this point, press the key of the item that you wish to change or Enter the PLU # and press the PLU Key. If the description of the item is ok then press 'cash/enter' and then press it again. You should be on the PRICE/Halo line, Change the amount to the correct amount and press cash/enter at this point you can then press the clear key and then turn the key to the 'REG' Position. Press the Key of the item you changed and it should display the new price.

Adding new PLU problem keep getting PLU Program Error

Those machines have a memory allocation section where you need to define the file sizes for products, etc. If your file size is smaller than the machine you are copying from, then it wont work. Try setting the memory allocation first.

What does inh.unit pr mean

INH. UNIT PR. means "Inhibit unit price". It means there is no price preprogramed for that department or PLU. Each department can be left open-priced, or preset. Open price is how you usually think of using a cash register: you enter a price, then touch the button. Preset price requires programing a price for a department in advance, but saves time in operation. You touch the Coffee button, for instance, and it automatically rings up the price you've set for a cup of coffee.
If you touch a normal, non-preset department without entering the price first, the register will error with the INH. UNIT PR message.
Touch the CLear key, enter the price, then touch the department.
Many of the Sharp registers, and I think the XE-A402 is one, allow a department to be both open and preset. It can also be programed to be inhibited completely.
The Owners Manual can be downloaded from Sharp here.
