black screen of HP notebook, but external monitor work, how to fix it?

  • Bidulle Jul 25, 2008

this happened when my laptop was 2 years had to buy a new separate screen.

  • Anonymous Jul 30, 2008

Have experienced the same problem only two 2 months after warranty expiry. HP responsed by saying -"your notebook is out of warranty and there's nothing we can offer and should you have considered taking out extended warranty." ****- Only if I had known back then after paying AUD $3,500 my notebook it was going to '*******' 2 months after warranty expiry. After receiving such a response I decided to contact HP Australia to express my disappointment. Well, did I the run around and gave up after 45 minutes. After 2 weeks at the local HP service repair centre here in MELBOURNE, I was firstly told the problem had been detected and would cost $180 to repair. Yeap, gave the ok and then was told later a new screen was required. "That's now twice"- appears the same level of '******* terrible service' is offered by HP's service repair centres. My only option is to go out and purchase an external monitor to avoid a ******* $800 repair bill.

Lesson - would highly recommend to others not to buy HP. Their service is extremely poor here in Australia and also in India.

In the past I had the problem where I would see the WindowsXP screen when turning on the laptop, but then nothing, no login screen, etc. Now I have a scarier problem: my screen is completely black when I turn on the machine. l have power, as indicated by the little lights, and once I was able to get the screen to work, but once out of 20 times is NOT GOOD ENOUGH. I'm a law student and this computer is nearly as essential as my legs and arms are. It seems to be the connection between the brain of the computer and the screen; how much does a repair of that cost (in USD), if even possible? FYI: I take excellent care of the laptop, never dropping it or flinging it around, and it has its own padded carrying case.

I 100% agree with you. i found out that my notebook is one of the recall product from HP. I sent it in for service. A week after the repair, the same problem is back again. So I call HP and they said that I have water damage on the board. I am 100% sure the notebook is no where need any liquid at all time. So they tell me if I want, they can fix it for me for $375. I would highly recommend everyone not to buy HP products!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I always have problem with HP products and I think they have the worst customer service of all. Once again, do not buy HP products!!!!

Depending on the model weve seen Backlights, Inverters, as well as Video chipset and VRAM failure cause the issue.. Post back the Model number please..

My Hp notebook screen is black, sometimes it fades in and out black to grey then to black.how can i fix it

Connect your laptop to an external monitor and switch to monitor. If the external monitor shows the desktop, then the complaint is in the lcd/led display unit means the screen. Replace the screen. If the external monitor also shows the complaint, then it is normally due the mch(media controller hub) . It comes as separate card unit in some models and onboard for some other models.Only an experienced technician can solve that issue. In some rare cases it is due to a corrupted BIOS. Reply if this helped you.

How to fix black screen on start up?

Are you connected to an external monitor? If so, it's probably outputting the display to the external monitor and the resolution and or refresh rate is set wrong so it doesn't display?

When i turn compurte on black screen only

This could be due to a couple of things. If your computer is actually starting up and you get no graphics (actually nothing at all on your monitor) then you could have a bad monitor or a bad video card. If the computer is working at all, the monitor should display something, if just an error message.
My suggestion-try an external monitor (be sure to press the Fn and special function key combo to send the signal to the external monitor).
If that doesn't work (either monitor), then the graphics card could have problems.
If the external monitor works, then you could have a loose connection to the screen or the screen could be bad or perhaps the inverter that runs the screen could be bad. In this case, you'll have to get it fixed.

Same problem--black screen

make sure it is the motherboard....try hooking an external monitor to it, to see if maybe it is the screen and/or its connections, the external works off a differernt interface.

FS050UA , COMPAQ PRESARIO NOTEBOOK PC CQ50-210US the screen has lines and a black spot

Hi,
Turn on the notebook and press F10 to get into BIOS screen. Even if the lines and the black spot appears then the issue is with the internal hardware of the notebook.
To check further connect an external monitor to the notebook and press Fn and F4 keys on the keyboard to get the display on external monitor. If the external monitor display is fine then the issue is with the LCD screen or else the issue is with the Video card of the notebook.

My screen went black

If your Notebook's screen went blank you can do the following:--

1) Try booting with an external monitor. Connect the external monitor to the VGA port given to the Notebook.
Result:1 --- If the external monitor is working fine, then the problem is with LCD. If your Notebook is under warranty you can get it repaired free of cost.
If your Notebook is out of warranty you can go to HP.com and purchase the LCD screen (If you are in USA please go to this link :--- http://h20141.www2.hp.com/hpparts/)

Result 2:--- After connecting the external monitor even the display is not there, then it is the problem with the motherboard. If your Notebook is under warranty then you can avail free repair.
If your Notebook is out of warranty you can go to HP.com and purchase the Motherboard (If you are in USA please go to this link :--- http://h20141.www2.hp.com/hpparts/)

HP dv9000

Hello jarkk, I believe your problem is with your backlight inverter. the hard drive should be installed for this process of checking it on an external monitor. with the hard drive removed it will not boot to the operating system. with the drive in, use the external monitor. if the monitor works when plugged into the external monitor plug, this will eliminate a bad video card. if the screen is still black on the laptop screen, replace your backlight inverter. the last case cenario is to make sure your backlights are not burnt out.
