The card that came with the camera suddenly stopped working: I received an error message "This card cannot be used". I have since purchased two more cards (Sandisk 2GB, that I learned is not supported for this camera, and then a Sandisk 1GB, that should work but doesn't), all three cards brings up the same error message. No buttons work, so I cannot get to the menu to Format the card. The camera will work without a card in the slot, but that is not practical. I cannot find a way to do a hard reset on the camera (I did reset the factory settings with the card(s) out, but that did not help).

If this camera uses SD cards then what may be happening is that the little lever that drops into the slot on the side of the card to indicate locked or unlocked is jammed in the locked position. If you shine a flashlight in you might be able to see where the pin is.
I have seen several question with the same issues on your camera. There where 3 possible reasons why do you received an error "clean or format card". First reason is your card was not formatted for the camera used. You need to format it first for you to be able to used the memory card. Second reason is memory card slot or the memory card itself requires cleaning. Yu can used soft and dry cloth to cleaned it, sometimes pencil eraser or any eraser can be used to clean the memory card, but you have to be careful in using it on your memory card. After you clean it, you also need to format the memory card. Third possible reason is memory card might need to replace.
Notes: All existing data, including protected pictures, are erased when internalmemory or card is formatted. Make sure that you save or transfer important data to a computer before formatting the memory or card.
Make sure that there is no card inserted in the camera when formatting the Internal Memory.
be sure that the card is inserted when formatting the Memory card.
Make sure that you have a fully charged battery or used the AC adapter.
I hope this information can help you.
Thank you for using FixYa.
Just so you know, I have this problem also. Anyway, the only thing that works for me is to turn the camera on WITHOUT the card inserted, then insert the card. After this, it will let me take ONE photo, video, or noise clip before it gives me the error again (strangely enough, I just figured out this solution a couple hours ago as I was browsing a listing for a similarly infected camera on eBay). For a permanent fix, the "cheap camera repair man" can repair both the menus and the error for 55 bucks on his website (DynamicCamera.com).

By the way, you only need one account, and one question.
Have you tried formatting these cards in your camera? You will find the setting in the menu as per page 26 of the manual.
Also check that the correct card type is set for xD or CF as appropriate.
