Question about Magic Chef Refrigerators

Magic Chef RB19KA-4A not cooling. Compressor is running as I can observe frost on the copper tubing. Condensor coils were cleaned off of dust but overnight the freezer temp only got down to 45 deg F. Any suggestions? Thanks.

It turned out to be a defective defrost timer. The bottom of the freezer box was removed to find the cooling coils covered with a block of ice. A hair dryer was used to thaw the ice, the timer replaced, the heater checked and then reassembled. A few clues to those with a similar problem......First clue....I failed to notice that the fans never stopped. Usually during the defrost cycle the condensor fan stops. The constant running fan should have tipped me off that the timer was not advancing. Second clue...I failed to notice the absence of water dripping into the evaporation pan below the fridge. Dripping water would indicate that the heater was melting ice on the cooling coils. No dripping water should have told me that the ice block was getting bigger. I'll know to check for these telltale signs in the future.

How did you remove the bottom of the freezer block?

It was determined to be a malfunctioning defrost timer. The freezer box bottom was removed (not an easy thing to do) and the coils found to be a solid block of ice. The timer would not start the defrost heater, hence the freeze up. The timer was replaced and the chill box is back in action.

Have magic chef mccf7wbx defrosted was frosted over from being left open. Plugged back in. Would not freeze. Compressor seems to run. Replaced start relay. Did not help.

are you sure it was fully defrosted b4 you plugged back in?
How did you defrost it? I assume you did not chip away at the ice with something sharp an punch a hole in the copper tubing.

Refrigerator and freezer not cooling

Top of Form

If there is no cooling at all , before we go further we must confirm the first step of confirming the compressor and gas pressure. So shut off the fridge and leave it off while you clean and check the evaporator for frost. If frost is seen it is a good indication as the compressor is working with sufficient gas within.
Now after about 6 hours plug in the fridge to start. Observe cooling to happen in about one hour and ice to from under three hours.
Earlier make sure that the thermostat was set to normal mode for freezer and fridge. If there is no ice formation we have a big issue as the compressor and gas must be checked out. If compressor is running check the pressure, get help to test gas pressure. If not you will need to fill up ,If gas pressure is good the possibility of the compressor being inefficient is high. In such a case you must take consensus to estimate and decide, if RPM of motor is low check capacitor.
However if Ice forms then observe the fridge for about 24 hours for cooling to continue and the fridge to cut off. If not the auto defrost timer, or the thermostat must be checked.

The ventilation fan that circulates the COLD air from the evaporator coils could get clogged with frost and so could be jammed. Also the wires to the fan can be worn out due to the frost. If so check if the defrost timer works to switch the heater to remove the frost. Also the check if the compressor is shut down by the timer /thermostat . If the heaters are not working, check continuity of the heaters.
So attempt to test using a multi-meter / clamp tester from the outside and make your observations so that we come to the solution.

sounds like the compressor is not running. The condenser fans are located at the compressor. The fans in the conditioned space are the evap fans. A refrig usually does not have any device controlling the evap fans, they are to run 24/7. Freezers have other controls. Start there and let me know if I can help further.

It is froze up there is no cool air going to the bottom. sometimes one will do that. defrost timer did not work. or the heat coil is bad. unplug it for about 8 hours to let it throw. and see if that will fix it. If it runs ok for about 5 days and dose it again. it is not defrosting.

Water runs under the vegetable bins

There should be a collecting channel with a hole and a tube reaching down to somewhere above the cooling compressor (Back of unit) where it should evaporate with the heat.
Most people never clean that hole and tube simply because they do not know what is for or the manual is silent. Sometime can be jammed with little icecube. I us thick plastic line from toy to clean, electrical wire with copper core not naked is also oke. Do not put wild force. This is the cooler part. The deep freezer part needs defrosting on temporarily basis and for that you need some small low bin to start collecting or keep on mobbing the floor.

Kenmore Refrgierator is not cooling enough

Is the frost on the entire surface of the evaporator or just a portion. If it is only frosting on a portion there is a possibility your system has developed a leak and has lost some of the charge. Or your compressor has lost its ability to pump the gas. A bad condenser fan motor overtaxes the compressor and can cause premature failure. If it is a bad compressor it may be time to replace the refrigerator. Replacing the compressor is an expensive job and the warranty is only one year on a replaced compressor.
