Will not start not getting fuel to carb - 1984 Chevrolet Camaro

Is there fuel pressure and fuel flow to the carb? If so then the needle and seat may be stuck closed in the carb.

Hey Dutch, have you tried anything like starting fluid to see if it will run..If it will not run, try removing the fuel line going to the carb..(does this carb have a filter in the inlet fitting???)..once the fuel line is loose.. (BE CAREFUL!) ..try starting the engine and see if fuel is pumped through the line to the carb...if you are not getting gas there.. time to work backwards until you find the problem..(does this engine have the fuel pump mounted on the side of the engine,if yes.. remember the fuel pump has to "pull" the fuel from the tank)..If you are getting fuel TO the carb.. make sure the carb is "taking" the fuel..(inlet filter).if you are getting fuel to the carb,, and it will still NOT RUN..(and won't run using "starting fluid")..its time to start looking for a timed spark..(assuming the engine has compression).. when you have done this, reply back to me on here... thanks... please mark as helpful.. Disconnect the fuel line from the carb. Put the fuel line in a container and crank the engine for 4 or 5 seconds. You should see good squirts of fuel. Better yet put a fuel pressure gauge in line just before the carb. You should have 4-7 psi. It might be quick to get a gas jug a start a syphon to the carb. Dont forget to catch the fuel from the disconnected fuel line. If it starts right up its probably the fuel pump. If not the carb may need a good cleaning and rebuild. Check float bowl level. Check idle air screw adjustment.

Disconnect your fuel line from your carburator and put a container to catch the fuel as you crank your engine...
You are doing this to make sure you are getting fuel to the carb from the new fuel pump you installed...because you might be "air bound"...not allowing the fuel pump to pump fuel to the carb.If your getting fuel to the carb, them make sure the float in the carb is not stuck and not allowing any fuel to get to the engine.

is the needle opeoning on the float in the carb? The fuel bowl should be about half full all the time. As fuel pressure flows into the needle & seat, it fills the fuel bowl until the float pushes the needle into the eat. Sometimes the rubber tipped needle can stick in the seat.

Holley carb? Autolite carb? Holley 4160?

I think that the only way that can happen is that fuel is getting past the rings and into the crankcase. You have changed the fuel pump, then that leaves the carb dumping fuel into the intake and getting past the rings. The fuel is not staying in the carb and that is why you have to spray to start.

If the car starts when you pour gas into the carb. The fuel pump is defective. Or the fuel filter is stopped up.

After you dump the fuel in the throttle body it will continue to run on its own or die as soon as it burns up all the fuel you dump in? Do you have access to (Noid lights)? Are both plugs attached to the distributor?

You need to get two things checked. Ignition and Fuel.

Ignition: typically in this order ... Start off from sparking plugs ,,, move to leads (get them changed) and on to the ignition coil if there is no spark coming out of it. In case of fuel, the carb needs a clean and a good carb cleaner or fuel treatment (added to the fuel tank) wont do any harm. You should open up the carb filter. Remove it and change it if its dirty. Start the engine rev it up and while its revved up (throttle flap open) spray the carb cleaner or in this will clean the carb cleaner from inside. If the power gradually increases its a clear sign that you need to open up the carb and get the jets cleaned. properly.

dont take carb off, drain fuel from tank if you got bad gas, fill with good gas, pull fuel line off carb and turn on key if have electric fuel pump, this will clean out line. get a spray can of carb cleaner from auto store and spray carb. hook up fuel line and try to start, should clean out carb with fresh fuel
