If you remember the exact date of the update you can uninstall it. If using XP, go to control panel and add/remove programs. there's a check box at the top to include updates in the list. Just scroll through the list and remove the update that made the changes.

No you will have to back up all your files and settings and reinstall your programs. I used Windows easy file and transfer wizard from Microsoft. It is already installed on your pc, go to your search and type in easy and it will be in the list. If it is just the sound, try updating the audio drivers. I would make the person who updated your system redo it the correct way you want it.

I would first try to get into HP wireless assitant which you can do through Control Panel (Start >> Control Panel or Start >> Settings >> Control Panel). In there you can turn your wireless on and off. Be sure to make sure the wireless switch at the front is turned on also. If the light near the wireless switch still remains orange, then you will need to get the motherboard repaired or replaced as this is a known issue. If you still have warranty, HP will repair this free of charge. Otherwise contact a repair company such as www.revivemylaptop.com

What is desktop.ini is it a virus?

Since Desktop.ini is a Windows system file, you are probably seeing it because you have set Explorer to display hidden/system files. By reversing this setting, you can get rid of Desktop.ini.
  1. In any Windows Explorer window, click Tools → Folder Options…
  2. Click on the View tab.
  3. Check off the radio button next to “Do not show hidden files and folders”.
  4. Put a check in the box next to “Hide protected operating system files (recommended)”.
  5. Click OK.

Hp pavillion dv1000 cd rom drive

memphisrains -

Sounds as though you may need to reinstall the driver for the laptop's cdrom drive. The easiest way I've found to do this is to download it directly from the manufacturer's web site; In your case, look here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-31831-1&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=435618&os=228&lang=en

Download the file to your desktop (file name is sp30367.exe), and run the installation to reinstall & update the DVD/CD-ROM drivers.

Hope this helps!
