Question about Dell XPS 200 PC Desktop

1 Answer

COMPUTER CRASHED? I think my computer has a virus. Alot of popups and anti virus software installed that I didnt installed and cant remove. Windows xp comes to the logo screen and keeps running not allowing me to get to my desk top. Do I need a new hard drive? If so, do I need windows re-installed. I dont have the disk. It was pre installed when I had this hard drive replaced. Its a Dell XPS.

Cannot get into safe mode. On start up its saying floppy disk failure. I dont have a floppy disk. Windows logo keeps running and when that happens the key board doesnt work. I can get into F2 and F12. Even from there when I try safe mode it runs something and then freezes. Thanks

Thanks alot. I believe I already have this disk. This is the second hard drive already for this computer. Any special tips for installing?

  • PRINCESJ73 Jul 23, 2008

I've tried the re-installation disk for windows and it didn't work. The windows logo still appears as its loading and nothing happens. The keyboard still doesn't work when this happens.

    Thanks

Try and boot into safe mode, if that works, get Spybot search and destroy, update it and run a full scan, that should remove the viruses and spyware. If you cant boot into safe mode, then you'll have to re-install windowws. Mine was doing the same thing, luckily i was able to boot in normal mode and use S&D. The second time it happened, i had to completely format the drive

See if you can get to safe mode. Write back to see if you can, and we will give you instructions on how to proceed from there.

Otherwise you will need a restore or winxp OS installation disk.

You will need a Operating System installation disk.

Since it is a dell, makes it a little easier, since there are so many out there. Do you know anyone with a Dell Computer, for most of Dell's Operating System disks work with MOST of Dell computers.

What you will need to find is a friend or co-worker with a Dell computer (that has XP installed), that has the disks. Otherwise you will have to either call Dell and buy from them the re-installation disks, or buy a Mircosofts Version of Windows XP and use it to re-install your Windows XP.

I am so sorry this is not an easy or free solution, but this is all that can be done at this point.

    Try this :

    1. Boot the computer using the XP CD.
    2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

    3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.
      To Repair Install, press ENTER
\r\n'); FP_changeProp(/*id*/'layer1',0,'style.borderStyle','double','style.borderWidth','3px','style.padding','5px','style.backgroundColor','#F9F4D5','style.backgroundImage','url(\'edgbkgnd4.gif\')'); FP_changeProp(/*id*/'layer1',0,'style.visibility','visible')" onclick="FP_changeProp(/*id*/'layer1',0,'style.visibility','hidden')" height="21" alt="To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER." src="http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/note.gif" width="15" border="0" /> do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
    4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
    5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.
    6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Yes the probable cause of this was a missed behaved anti virus program. Formating your computer and installing a new operating system would work, but there is still one option to perform. Why not try to repair your xp installation instead . If you run your xp operating system setup disk, At first you will be prompted to repair or install a new operating system, then press enter to install a new os. After pressing f8 it will search for a recent xp installation . select repair and leave the current file system intact no changes. But if you really want to change your operating system XP to Win7, yes it will work with your computer, but the softwares and programs that you'll need will also have to be compatible with win7. The most important thing here is your computers drivers installation. If you have your computer drivers installation cd, you could proceed. Have a nice day .

<b><u>An insight in VIRUS INFECTION and VIRUS SPREADING</u></b><br /> <br /> In today's computing spreading of virus is fast and very common.<br /> Even with an up to dated antivirus software the spreading of the virus infection is fast.<br /> This is because, we are not aware of how the virus spreads in our system.<br /> Once we know how the virus infects and spreads in our system then we will definitely reduce the risk, time and money spent.<br /> <br /> <b><u>Here is a short insight about viruses:</u></b><br /> <br /> 1) Virus is a small program code enabling it to to mingle or merge with other program codes.<br /> <br /> 2) The Virus Program Code is written such that it deletes data, corrupts data, steals data send it to the maker of the code, etc.<br /> <br /> 3) The virus cannot run on its own. It has to be executed just like other exe program files. That is why the autorun.inf file is required.<br /> <br /> <b><u>Now for an insight how we get infected:</u></b><br /> <br /> 1) Thorugh the internet: Usually when we browse any web site files are downloaded from the web server to our temporary internet folder(in windows) Then our Browser software reads the files and executes them in the browser window for us to view the web site.( If you are a website Designer you would understand this for others get an insight how internet browsers work), So when we are in the internet Virus files attach themself to the downloading files and enter our system in the temporary folder, From here they are executed by our browser software or when any program accesses the temporary folder.<br /> <br /> 2) Another one is we download a lot of data from the internet, we should be careful on what we are downloading because if the data downloaded is infected with virus then we are downloading the virus to our system along with the data, Don't download the data unless you are sure you could trust the maker of the data, program, etc.<br /> <br /> 3) From other medias like Flash Drive, CD's, DVD,s,etc.:<br /> We copy a lot of data to our computer from our friends and relatives, so if the data is already infected with virus we copy the virus to our system also, when we run os use the data the virus is executed along with it.<br /> <br /> <b><u>Now for an insight how Virus Spreads:</u></b><br /> <b></b> <br /> Just like any other program code the virus code has to be executed.<br /> That is why the virus merges with other exe's which are executable and not with the data file.<br /> <br /> For eg: a file with .avi, .dat, .3gp, etc. all these files are data files they dont execute, but they are used by exe files like wmplayer.exe, winamp.exe, vlplayer.exe, etc. The .avi .dat .3gp files are data files, the wmplayer.exe, winamp.exe vlplayer.exe are program files. Thus mostly exe program file get infected with virus.<br /> <br /> Usually when our system gets infected and any antivirus program cleans our system you can notice that the windows media player or winamp player or vlc media player does'nt work because it is removed or deleted by the antivirus for virus infection but the songs or video you saved is unharmed in the harddisk.<br /> <br /> That is why the virus code hangs or merges or infects mostly exe program files, So that it is executed along with the program file.<br /> <br /> So when you run an infected windows media player to play a song the virus code is also run along with the windows media player. Thus the virus is run again and again.<br /> <br /> There are hundreds of program files in the os for doing various tasks.<br /> we are going to look into just one program which the virus uses to spread itself in our system.<br /> <br /> The Program is non other than explorer.exe in windows. This program is needed to view or browse the data files stored in the hard disk.<br /> When we double click the My Computer Icon on the desktop the explorer.exe is executed which show you a window on your screen with the hard disk drives and cd dvd drives in the windows Now you can imagine how frequently you use the explorer.exe. You use it to view any data on the computer, even our desktop uses explorer.exe. This program is executed right when windows logs us on.<br /> <br /> When this program file is infected, it keeps on executing the virus each time we use the program. by this method the virus spreads fast to every parts of the hard disk.<br /> <br /> Likely there is a method to avoid executing the virus along with the explorer.exe each time we use it.<br /> <br /> When we double click any icon or object on our windows screen we execute the default command in the right click menu. Usually it is the Run Command. for eg: when you double click word the word.exe runs, similarly when we double click the my computer icon the default right menu option is <b>Open</b> which run the explorer.exe program.<br /> <br /> Instead of using this method to view files and data in our system we could use an alternate method which is using the explorer menu option when we right click my computer or right click the windows start button or in fact the explorer option is there whenever you right click any object on the screen.<br /> <br /> By using this explorer option in the right click you get a window with two panes one to the left and one to the right. In the left pane you have the directory structure showing all the directories and folders in our hard disk and in the right pane the content of the directory or folder selected in the left pane.<br /> <br /> Thus in this process we dont execute any code or program command when viewing the data in our hard disk. because we do not execute the explorer.exe more than once.<br /> <br /> So, Imagine how we reduce the spreading of virus by using this method.<br /> <br /> Say you have a file saved in your hard disk in this location<br /> <br /> <b>C:\data\monday\20-11-2010\office\media\todaysjob.doc</b><br /> <br /> If you want to open the file with word we will double click my computer, then double click C Drive, then Double Click data folder, then double click monday folder, then double click 20-11-2010 folder, then double click till you come to the media folder then you double click the todaysjob.doc which will execute the word.exe program which reads the data in the todaysjob.doc file and displays the content as required. In this process see how many time you will execute the virus, You will run the virus Seven Times.<br /> <br /> In our Alternate method You will run the Explorer.exe only once, Then on you just navigate to the media folder then double click the todaysjob.doc file in the right panel. So you execute the virus only once. <br /> <br /> Hence you reduce the spreading of VIRUS to a great extend.<br /> <br /> Good Luck, If there are any mistake please bare with me, I am not a good writer. Actually Free AntiVirus Software (Windows Only)

Note: Only for legitimate users of Windows XP/Vista/7.

If you are tired of paying for Anti-Virus software for your computer, the day has finally come when you no longer have to pay for it. Microsoft has released their own anti-virus program for all windows users (with legit copies of windows), probably to compete with apple. The software is called Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), and will most likely be free forever (updates and all). The software is available for XP (32-bit) and both Vista and Windows 7 (32- and 64- bit).

Now before installing MSE you must first uninstall the current anti-virus software you use. Before uninstalling the program, it's features must be shut-off as they are typically designed to protect themselves from removal. In order to do this, move your mouse to the bottom right corner of your screen. Double click on the icon for your anti-virus software (for MSE this is a little house). This will open a control screen for your software. On this screen uncheck or disable all features of your anti-virus software, there will likely be warnings against proceeding - disregard these. Next we will uninstall the program, this can be done by gone within the control panel: click on "Start" then "Control Panel", click on the "Add or Remove Programs" link and then navigate to your anti-virus software. Always remove peripheral components first (i.e. for Symantec products remove the LiveUpdate or anti-malware feature first) followed by the main component (i.e. for Symantec products this would be the symantec anti-virus module). You may have to restart several times during this process, you should always restart when prompted. Once you have removed all of the programs labeled with the maker of your anti-virus software your computer will be ready to install MSE.

Now we can go ahead and begin the MSE installation process. The installer can be found at the following website: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
a6a75d2.jpg
Be sure to choose the correct version of the software: select the "Download Now" button, and click on the link corresponding to your operating system. This will initiate a download, when the file has saved to your computer, double click on the installer and follow on-screen instructions to installing MSE. Updating the product immediately and then promptly running a system scan is highly recommended.

Enjoy free anti-virus software for life!! Another interesting fact...according to an independent rater of anti-virus software, Virus Bulletin, MSE is one of the very best with a VB100 rating: http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archive/results?vendor=VE70
Enjoy!

Go to download.com and install one of the free anti-viruses. It would also be worth downloading anti anti-malware product as well.

I recommend Avast Free Anti-virus and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (both are free).

Think Point!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All these solutions sound nice. The problem is that even in "Safe Mode with Networking" I cant access anything on the computer that includes the start menu. So I cant install...

One way:
* remove the disk-drive from your computer
* install a different disk-drive (any old, 4GB or larger, disk-drive will work)
* install Windows onto that disk
* install anti-virus software onto that disk
* reconnect the previous disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive
* launch the anti-virus software, targetting that "slave" disk-drive
* shutdown
* disconnect the different disk-drive
* boot from the original disk-drive, now that it is virus-free

Everytime I try to login to myspace, I get a popup covering my page. How do I get rid of the popups?

Sounds like you may have some sort of Malware infection on your computer.

  1. Download a program called "MalwareBytes Anti-Malware"
  2. Install and run a scan with the program, remove any found infections
This will remove most malware/adware on your computer. As a precautionary measure I would also recommend running a virus scan. If you do not have an anti-virus software on your computer, I would recommend any of the following (they are all free and effective) :

If the problem still persists after both an anti-malware and anti-virus scan I would recommend taking it to a local computer repair shop for further examination. Persistent and random pop-up ad's are the first sign of a virus/malware infection. You don't want to wait till it's too late!

Virus problem

Hi, viruses are quite easy to remove, and shouldnt cost you anything if done correctly.

uninstall any virus software you have, download this software and install it
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Panda-Antivirus-Titanium.shtml
update it and scan the whole system, it will pick them up and remove them, then once its took off as many as it can, uninstall this virus check and install a different one like this

http://us.trendmicro.com/us/products/

do one more scan and your as good as new...

you dont have to change the virus checker the second time, but alot of virus checker dont always pick up them all so always better to scan with two different ones to make sure there all off..

All the best
