Question about Dell XPS 200 PC Desktop

1 Answer

COMPUTER CRASHED? I think my computer has a virus. Alot of popups and anti virus software installed that I didnt installed and cant remove. Windows xp comes to the logo screen and keeps running not allowing me to get to my desk top. Do I need a new hard drive? If so, do I need windows re-installed. I dont have the disk. It was pre installed when I had this hard drive replaced. Its a Dell XPS.

    Cannot get into safe mode. On start up its saying floppy disk failure. I dont have a floppy disk. Windows logo keeps running and when that happens the key board doesnt work. I can get into F2 and F12. Even from there when I try safe mode it runs something and then freezes. Thanks

    Thanks alot. I believe I already have this disk. This is the second hard drive already for this computer. Any special tips for installing?

    I've tried the re-installation disk for windows and it didn't work. The windows logo still appears as its loading and nothing happens. The keyboard still doesn't work when this happens.

    Try and boot into safe mode, if that works, get Spybot search and destroy, update it and run a full scan, that should remove the viruses and spyware. If you cant boot into safe mode, then you'll have to re-install windowws. Mine was doing the same thing, luckily i was able to boot in normal mode and use S&D. The second time it happened, i had to completely format the drive

See if you can get to safe mode. Write back to see if you can, and we will give you instructions on how to proceed from there.

Otherwise you will need a restore or winxp OS installation disk.

    You will need a Operating System installation disk.

    Since it is a dell, makes it a little easier, since there are so many out there. Do you know anyone with a Dell Computer, for most of Dell's Operating System disks work with MOST of Dell computers.

    What you will need to find is a friend or co-worker with a Dell computer (that has XP installed), that has the disks. Otherwise you will have to either call Dell and buy from them the re-installation disks, or buy a Mircosofts Version of Windows XP and use it to re-install your Windows XP.

    I am so sorry this is not an easy or free solution, but this is all that can be done at this point.

    Try this :

    1. Boot the computer using the XP CD.
    2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below
      This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
      Windows XP to run on your computer:

      To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

      To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

      To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

    3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.
      To Repair Install, press ENTER
      \r\n'); FP_changeProp(/*id*/'layer1',0,'style.borderStyle','double','style.borderWidth','3px','style.padding','5px','style.backgroundColor','#F9F4D5','style.backgroundImage','url(\'edgbkgnd4.gif\')'); FP_changeProp(/*id*/'layer1',0,'style.visibility','visible')" onclick="FP_changeProp(/*id*/'layer1',0,'style.visibility','hidden')" height="21" alt="To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER." src="" width="15" border="0" /> do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
    4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
    5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.
    6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Think Point!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All these solutions sound nice. The problem is that even in "Safe Mode with Networking" I cant access anything on the computer that includes the start menu. So I cant install...

One way:
* remove the disk-drive from your computer
* install a different disk-drive (any old, 4GB or larger, disk-drive will work)
* install Windows onto that disk
* install anti-virus software onto that disk
* reconnect the previous disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive
* launch the anti-virus software, targetting that "slave" disk-drive
* shutdown
* disconnect the different disk-drive
* boot from the original disk-drive, now that it is virus-free

Run your PC in safe mode with networking prompt as an administrator(because in normal mode the virus will not allow/let you to run a setup file if it's a dangerous virus).Install strong anti-virus like Kaspersky, NOD32 etc. registered version. Update the anti-virus in safe mode and also run.

I think it will help you.

Good Luck

Installing windows xp and computer says ALTDR is compressed

ALTDR.EXE is a virus. You will need to remove it with anti-virus software and then install windows (or you could format the drive before installing windows xp, if you don't have anything on it you want to save).

AcerPower 1000 -- VERY slow loading

Your potential problem might be a virus. If you are having an updated anti-virus software and are running regular scans and found nothing, Then this might be the problem, while making the system get restored, the frequent problem is that, xp doesn't load the drivers which you installed for your system and it loads its own drives (which sometimes won't go with your devices). Try installing the drivers (especially display and motherboard drivers). If this doesn't work, I better suggest that you do a complete format of the system and install windows xp afresh.. Then there should be no problem. These're the possible solutions which i can infer from the details you've given..

If its just the popups the simple way is :

You can download a simple software from here

You can add the pages also,

This will not allow them to open at all.

If you are sue it is virus i recoment you to reinstall the operating system to get rid of them.

Good Luck.
