There is no manual way to switch from battery to AC, the machine or docking station should automatically switch between battery and AC. There is a power management chip inside the laptop that regulates the power and switches from battery to AC when plugged in. Some docking stations have a chip built into them to do this. Start by ruling out the power supply. Do this by undocking the laptop and plug it in using the power supply that is attached to the docking station and see if the machine is just running off of battery. If it is running off battery, then check the power supply with an ohm meter for the proper output. The output readings are on the supply. If you have two power supplies, and you know one works with the machine, try that supply on the docking station. If the power supply checks good, then I'm afraid the pm chip on the motherboard has gone out. You will need to take this in to have it professionally diagnosed, because it could be a replaceable component that works in conjunction with the pm chip. However, if it is the pm chip, then the motherboard will have to be replaced in order to fix it.

sounds like the situation is with the AC adapter detection. try to restore your BIOS defaults and update BIOS if applicable. Test another AC adapter. If that fails, most likely, this is with the motherboard. You may either get a new board, or just continue to charge it using the docking station.

Remove Any Docking Stations or Port Replicators From the Computer Note: Docking stations and port replicators are optional equipment. If you are unsure if you have a docking solution attached to your computer, refer to Table 1 and Table 2 for examples. To remove the docking station or port replicator, perform the following steps: Shut down the computer. Remove the docking station: Universal Docking Stations: Disconnect the docking station's USB cable from the computer. D/Port or D/Dock: Remove any cable locks from the security slot on the right side of the docking station. Move the slide lock forward to the unlocked position. If the docking station charging doesn't work either and your battery is ok you have lost voltage regulator (it prevents overcharging of battery) Take the battery to a battery plus store and they can check it..

If not powering from DOCK, AC adapter and only from battery, since the Battery, DOck and adapter are known good, it is a matter of a motherboard replacement

Power jack connection broken on HP Omnibook xe3

I bought a docking station (port replicator) off ebay, and it has worked great. I had a look at the motherboard, and the docking station uses a different connection for power than the damaged AC port. So in summary, yes a docking port should solve your problem.

If you can get a docking station for it you may be able to solve it that way.

D630 docked , ext mouse & kybd not responding

If the docking station has power:

Make sure power is off for both the laptop and the docking station. Plug your keyboard and mouse into the docking station. Dock the D630 to the docking station and then power on docking station. This should then turn on your D630. Your D630 should detect the keyboard and mouse.

If the docking station has no power:

Verify that the power cord, AC adaptor, etc. is plugged in. If the items listed seem to be in order,
there may be a problem with the power going into the docking station. (AC adaptor?)

support.dell.com will have the specific details for your D630 and your docking station, et al.

Please let me know if you have success in this.

docking station for my old compaq armada did not "charge seperately" but did supply power to the pc through docking connector and not through the normal ac input, cant say if they have their own power transformers or not, till i go home and take my old docking station apart. DEAD PRESARIO 1925 NOTEBOOK

Try this, with laptop removed from docking unit:

1. Press and hold the laptop power button down, for 10 seconds.
2. Now remove the battery
3. Repeat step one above
4. Let the laptop sit for 10 minutes.
5. Reinstall the battery
6. Make sure docking station is unplugged, and insert laptop into docking station.
7. Plug in power supply (to dock)
8. Start the laptop.
9. IF IT STARTS, let it run a while to see if the battery is charging
10. Remove it from the dock and repeat steps 1-5 above and then go directly to 8 (start without connecting dock).

CONCLUSIONS: If the laptop started in the dock on step 9 but not 10 (only on battery), your battery or power regulator circuit may be damaged. However, if it starts in step 10 but not step 9, your docking station -or its AC power supply may be damaged Let me know how this comes out, please.
