I had my maxtor one touch 4 750 gb external hard drive installed on a dell laptop with windows xp i plugged it into a mac and installed it but couldnt get it to work so i plugged it back into my laptop and plugged another hard drive in as well and the downloaded a bunch of music and videos from the other to mine. i then safely unplugged both from my computer. the next day i went to plug it back in to download some more stuff and i couldnt get it to register that it was plugged in. nothing pops up and my maxtor folder is saying that no device is hooked up. the other hard drive on the other hand came up just fine. the light on the front of my maxtor wont stop blinking. any ideas.

Macs don't automagically understand NTFS of FAT32, they have to be convinced to mount those filesystems with extra driver software.  Try hooking the Maxtor to another USB port as you like, but it sounds like it's stuck in some useless mode...so definitely cycle the power to it also.  Run Maxtor's utilities if it still won't come up on its own USB port.

Hi there, I think it may be to do with the format of the harddrive - see if you used the Maxtor in a Windows XP environment it would have been formatted to suit that OS.

Is the Harddrive formatted to NTFS?

HI,
The maxtor one touch hardrives generally have a 3 year warranty on them. If you have the orginal invoice for the same, I would suggest you to call maxtor and they can help you out on the same. The support information is available on the site below

How to install new hard drive

2 choices for you. Get the external to run the game or 2. Add a larger hdd to the system as a slave drive leaving the smaller drive as the master. If you go the 2nd route just make sure you buy a compatible hdd. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer.

My Mac laptop running OS X 10.5.5 is not recognizing my Maxtor One Touch 4 Mini 320gb external drive. I plug it in, the light on the drive comes on, but nothing else happens.

check to make sure the drive is formatted to the FAT file system as NTFS file system is not recognised on Macs (check the drive on a PC and have the PC format the drive to the FAT file system)

I have a Maxtor One-Touch III 750GB External Drive that has worked well for over a year. This past weekend the icon disappeared from my desktop and I can't get it back. I'm running a MaxOS X 10.5.5 OS...

mine will also occasionally disappear. i have had to do a restart of the pc which gets it back for my 160 gb firewire external.
the blinking light may be indicative of the hdd going bad, though.

My Maxtor 120 GB external hard drive is not compatible with windows XP

Most likely you'll need to covert the file system on the Maxtor drive to NTFS

Example command:

CONVERT E: /FS:NTFS
