Hi catg80, Your PC is suspected infected by virus / spyware. Pls try scanning your pc for virus / spyware by using antivirus or antispyware program. If you still facing problem after it, the last choice is to format and reinstall your windows.

My Sony Laptop is stuck, not reboot nor shutdown,

Hey there, when your computer completely freezes while still being on you simply have to remove the power cable and pull out the battery. Then put the battery and/or power cable back in. When you start up your computer again it will say your computer wasn't shut down properly, simply select "start windows normally" and everything should be fine again.

My computer is shutting down on its own. Is this

Scanning computer to eliminate malwares, spywares and the viruses from your laptop.
2- Repairing and cleaning Windows registry.
These two tips are found to be very helpful to fix the laptop shutdown problem. Almost all the computer users surf internet which could result in viruses attacking your system. Some of these infections are really pesky and cause the machines to shutdown randomly.
The registry errors, however, are the internal errors and can become a cause of system crashes and freezes. The registry keys shall be in good health to keep a system perfect.
When I noticed my laptop keeps shutting down everytime, I tested the Intel Software Partner, RegInOut to fix the random shutdown problem with my laptop.

Shut Down Problem & Have to Reset Computer Battery

Hi, I had the same problem, for a workaround this is what I did. I made a new shutdown shortcut. Now when I click on it the pc shutsdown fine. I actually put mine on the taskbar. Here's how I did it...

XP Users:
1. Right click the Desktop and select New /Shortcut.
2. A screen will appear asking you for a Command Line. Here's what you put in that box:
For Shutdown:
Shutdown -s -t 0

For Restart:
Shutdown -r -t 0

For Log Off:
Shutdown -l -t 0

After you've decided which of the above options to use, click the Next button and give the shortcut an appropriate name.
Final Notes:
1. Now that you have the nifty little shutdown shortcut on your desktop, you may want to drag it to your taskbar for easier access (and less chance of accidental clickage).
2. I didn't like the nasty looking icon that XP gave my shortcut (it was too Win3.1 for my taste), so I changed it.

If this helps you plz rate this 'fixya'. If not leave a comment & I'll be happy to try to help you further. Thank you kindly.

My laptop won't shut down properly!

Is it possible that you have changed the settings of what buttons do what on your system? E.g. you could have changed the power button to "switch user" instead of "shut down", to check this (in XP) go to "Power Options" (in Control Panel" and then click on the "Advanced tab" at the top, then select "Shut down" from the drop down menu at the bottom of the window.

If this is already set to shut down then maybe you could do a system restore in case another setting has been changed, restore it to before the PC started doing this.

Alternatively try actually choosing "Turn off Computer" from the Log On screen (press Ctrl + L to get to this screen, or choose switch user/log off). If you are using Vista I beleive that there is a shut-down option from the Log In Page there (which again you can access by pressing Ctrl + L on the keyboard.

Hope this helps!

Overheating and sporadic shutdown - does this follow screen freezes and fan stopping?

I would suggest you have the fans/heat sinks cleaned as soon as you can. it is most likely shutting down because of heat (thermal shutdown). on some laptops the fan doesn't come on till close to melt down (my inspiron laptop is great for that). If you are at uncomfortable with taking the bottom of the laptop off to clean out the dust and dirt from the fan take it to a shop and have it done.
you may want to invest in one of those laptop chillers... basically a stand with fans on it. they make usb ones that get there power from the usb connection. abit ruff on the battery if you are not using a/c but better then replacing the cpu.

500XL will not shutdown properly!

Firstly you need to get into the bios by pressing f2 or Del on start up and when in the bios look in the advanced menu for ACPI and meke sure that it is enabled, this allows the motherboard to recognise the auto shutdown through windows, then save settings and exit for a re boot. Next click start>control panel>power options and check in the power schemes and other tabs, to make sure that the settings are correct for shutting the system down.
