Question about Rinnai Toyostove Direct Vent Heater: Toyostove Laser 73 Shipping

1 Answer

Toyostove 72 won't go on high.

I bought a used laser 72 from a "burner tech" that works for the local fuel company. Ever since the first day of install(did it myself using the manual) It wouldn't go into high mode without triping into reset mode. I let it be and it ran fine for a year, even though it never did the 2 AM high burn to clean carbon and soot.
Anyways it quit about a month ago and I finally had time to look at it. Came across this website and was able to determine through another problem that I needed to clean mine and when I took it apart the burner mat was toast. Cleaned, preped and replaced mat and gaskets. Fired it of and it runs but the flame is mostly blue but has yellow flickers, and when it goes into high the flame goes all yellow then goes out quickly.
My center piece is warped a little, is this the cause of the yellow flickers and not allowing it to go into high???

Replacing the burner ring (center piece?) will do wonders. When it's warped the stove won't work properly.

Laser 72

Your manufacturer, Toyotomiusa, recommends that you tighten all the joints on the fuel line. Your owner's manual CLICK HERE contains detailed drawings showing the location of all parts, including the fuel injector. Your unit will need to be serviced by a qualified technician if you have tightened the connectors and still smell kerosene or find wet spots under your heater. It should not leak or smell of kerosene. If you're smelling kerosene, you should not operate the unit, because the leak may cause a fire.

Will not start when I press manual button then when I press the auto button, I hear a high pitched screeching sound. Is this a burner motor problem ? What is the fix? Thank You. Laser model 55...

fribue,

I am not an expert but I had a similar situation with my 55. My 55 was only making a droning sound when I turned it on. I contacted the company and they told me it could be excess carbon build up in the exhaust fan.

I accessed the exhaust fan from the back of the heater. I took a pencil with an eraser stuck it in the exhaust port and gently begun to spin the fan using the pencil eraser. After a minute or so the exhaust fan starting moving very freely. Then it worked like a charm

I hope this helps.

Low heat output. Older Laser 72. Does something

It's likely that the burner mat has came loose or it has a lot of carbon buildup in the burner. Look at the flame when the heater is on. It should be mostly blue with slight yellow tips. You might need to clean the fuel nozzle also. You can remove the fuel pipe where it connects to the burner and use a piece of wire or an allen wrench that will fit in the nozzle that goes into the burner to remove any carbon that may have built up. You can also clean the burner but don't destroy the mat in the bottom. You can find the owner's manual at toyostove.com and it will give you some more things to clean.

My Laser 72 will run a full cycle, seems to be warming, shuts off after a cycle (fan comes on, etc.) then reset button shows red. Have changed filter outside, have blown lines out, have cleaned filter on...

You may have something as simple as a blocked fuel nozzle. Take a paper clip and stick about 2 inches of it down the fuel nozzle into the burner. This will clear any carbon on the tip. While you are at it remove the flame sensor. That's the white wire going into the burner. Wipe it off and install it pointing down. This could got you going. Bottom line however, the heater is so old Toyo is no longer supporting it. No electrical parts as well as some other stuff. It's time to up grade.

Good luck,

Laser 72 is overheating. Top gets too hot to

Check the fan cage on the back, it should be cleaned to allow for adequate air flow. Be sure curtains are not getting pulled up to the fan cage.
This could also be due to a crack in the pot, or if you put too much fuel treatment in your fuel. Regardless of what is causing the overheat situation, an L 72 is a very old unit. You may not want to invest a great deal of money into repairing this unit. The manufacturer has discontinued several parts for the L 72 such as the main circuit board and the burner rings. Without these parts, you are out a heater.
If you can clean the fan cage and remedy the problem, that would be great. If it is a cracked pot, and you decide to replace, be sure that you know how long it has been since you replaced the ring. A ring in a Laser lasts about 7 years. If your technician does not have rings in stock, you could be out of luck when your unit needs a ring.
Be sure to plug the unit into a dedicated outlet and use a quality surge protector with at least 450 Joules to help protect the board. Hope this was of some help. If you have any further questions, visit www.keepuswarm.com. We do have inventory of these discontinued parts for Laser heaters if you decide to repair and your technician cannot get the needed parts.

Toyo 55, igniter gets hardened build-up

Gartyl,

Your Laser 55 burner mat has erroded away. The fuel is pooling someplace in the burner rather than spreading smoothly over the bottom. The stuff on the igniter may be hardened carbon from a poor flame. Bottom line is some burner work. A new mat, ring and cleaning the burner air holes is in order. Don't be surprised if the heat chamber is cracked beyond repair when you get it off. NOW for the bad news. The Laser 55 and 72 are older heaters. You will find just about all the electrical parts are going to be hard to find. They are no longer being made. Your 55 will be able to use the newer 56 blower, mat and burner ring. You will also be able to use the heat element off a 56 as well. If there is a problem with the fuel pump causing your poor flame you will be out of luck.

Good luck,

Laser 56 - leaking fuel at heater feed through

Sky,

It sounds like the igniter is no good. Everytime you try to start the stove the fuel pump puts fuel into the burner. If the igniter works it burns it out, if not it just builds up. If it gets high enough it comes out the igniter. Now, there could be another reason for the fuel. Have you ever pushed the little red putton on the sump? I will say, do not push that button until you know what it does. It can flood your heater big time. Rule of thumb for the red button, one time for one second, only.

You need to sop up the fuel from inside the burner. Use a rolled up paper towel. Once you have proved the igniter you can try again. If you can't prove the igniter you need a new one.

The reset button comes on for laser 72

The thumping noise is the fuel pump starving for fuel. It sould like you are having a fuel problem. NO fuel, low fuel, dirty filter.

Chances are (just guessing) it's the pump. Is your display lit up? It isn't the power then. I replaced my pump. It was fairly easy to do. Just make sure you disconnect the power, and the fuel.
