Question about Logitech Harmony 550 Remote Control

Remote seems 'dead' unless plugged into USB

Just bought a used Harmoy 550 on eBay and it only lights up or shows any text when the unit is plugged into the PC / setup software.

I tried multiple sets of batteries, but it seems dead in the water unless it's plugged in.

Any ideas?

I ended up getting a replacement unit from the eBay seller (it was still under warranty). I never could fix the original one I received, with firmware updates or anything...sorry!

How do you replace the Infrared LED's in a Harmony 550 Remote?

To replace it you have to open your remote control. As you can see, it is located at the front of the remote control. In most cases, the fault occurs to this is a loose solder terminal at its connection to inside printed circuit board. Just check this, before you replace it. Failure to this infrared LED is rare. Normal cause will be as said above. If a resoldering do not help you, replace it. It is a cheap to buy component, and can be bought from most of the electronic spare part shops at your town. Hi.

Perhaps you do not already have the Harmony software installed on your PC?
If not, it's on the CD and you will need the USB cable to connect the remote to PC, but that comes much later after you have constructed a configuration on your Logitec account. Then the 550 should certainly be able to show more than just the welcome message.

You don't really need the CD because you might as well download the latest software version from the Logitec website for 550, install it on PC, and get the full instructions there.

Next register using the software on PC and check that you have the the latest firmware according to the instruction manual. The on-screen guide on PC will lead you through making a configuration for your devices.

Remote is in safe mode

You can try this solution to your Harmony 550 Safe mode problem:

Harmony 550 Safe Mode Fix Safe Mode is a diagnostic tool in the Remote used for troubleshooting purposes. If the words "Safe Mode" or "Safe Mode Requested" appear on the remote, complete the following steps:

1. Ensure the Remote is in "Safe Mode Requested" by taking out the batteries, and disconnecting the remote from the USB cable.
2. Hold down the Off button and plug the remote into the USB.
3. Continue holding down the Off button for another 10 seconds. The remote should then display the words "Safe Mode Requested".
4. With the unit in "Safe Mode Requested", re-install the firmware by clicking Support on your home page.

My harmony 550 remote is in Safe Mode and will not respond to any button I push. How do I get my remote to work again?

Did you try this response from the Logitech users' forum? It can't hurt to try since all your settings are stored on the web, not on the remote.

Blank Harmony 550

Well, I finally put together what worked for me:

1) pull a battery.
2) hold the power button down when you replace the battery - this should FINALLY get 'sefe mode' to show up on the remote
3) update remote

You may need to keep the battery our of the remote for 1 hour or so.
You may need to do this multiple times.
You may need to press power - OK - 0 <zero> at the same time before you do this (This is only if all else fails and you are really desparate and want to try anything. Try it with the batteries in only, Try it with the batteries out and hold all three down while you plug in the USB cable).

I did these various steps multiple times and it finally worked. Trye the 3 steps top down and then with each of the alternatives a couple of times for each alternative.
Use the 'Power' - 'OK' - '0' sequence as a VERY LAST resort - this really messes with the remote and may cause it to get worse and require you to do the steps many times before it finally works.
