Question about Flat Panel Televisions
I have a vertical black stripe about 3-4 inches wide right of center on screen that wont go away. Have a Magnavox with same problem, but only half of screen, 3inches wide. What did the repair cost?
If there is no picture behind the stripe and the edges are well-defined, then one of the display driver ICs has failed. Philips displays can be made by several manufacturers - usually Samsung. The ICs are bonded to the flexible ribbon in most cases, and replacement is an expensive specialist job - and in many cases is simply not possible.
A shadow on the picture is much better - usually due to interference.

I have the same problem with my 3 year old LG LCD TV. I brought it to a certified repair center and they said the screen is broken because of micro-cracks which were formed because of heating up and cooling down. They said Philips and LG have a whole series of TV's with this problem. Repair is possible by replacing the entire screen which is more expensive than an new TV...
So a TV which is about to last for 50,000 hours broke after only 3,500 hours : (
