Question about HP Pavilion (PN153AAR) PC Desktop

Missing file when computer is turned on

This message appears when I turn on computer (windows could not start, file missing) windows root>\system32\hal.dll

Everyone who has tried to help me say do F8, etc. No matter which key I touch all I get is the message above. I was doing a recovery from my D:drive which is the hp recovery. I do not have cds, they did not come with my computer. How can I get this file and if I do, how do I reinstall it as my computer will not let me in.

Re-run the recovery.

This is a common symptom when the recovery fails the final phase of the HP recovery.

Since you say you are getting hal.dll, this must be an XP PC and you need to shut down the PC, remove any third party video or add-on cards installed (added RAM or Hard Drives are OK to leave in) and disconnect any peripherals (printers, scanners, etc.).

Once you have confirmed ONLY the monitor, KB and mouse are connected (preferrably the ones that shipped with the PC), start the PC and press the F10 key at the Blue HP logo screen until you see the PC entering the "hp pc system recovery" progress bar at the bottom of the screen. When you see the Recovery Manager first screen, click on "Advanced Options" - this performs a destructive recovery of the PC versus the default path which just reloads the OS. Once you click on "Advanced Options" check the top of the next screen to make sure the green arrow is pointing to Destructive Recovery and NOT MS System Restore (some HP models have this option). Then follow the default keys "Next", Yes and Yes. The recovery should take about 20 minutes. Good luck.

Hi, hal.dll file to communicate with your computer hardware. if you are able to goto command prompt then do the following :
ensert your cd into the cd drive asuming that d is your cd drive then do the following :

expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll
and press y when prompted.

alternate you have to reinstall the os.

Error message corrupt file or missing


hi, the best thing to do here is press f8 on start-up, you will then be greeted with a number of options select safe mode ,and then select System restore, hopeful it was turned on so you can step back before Angry birds was downloaded, you will need to press f8 a couple of times straight after the bios display on the screen...

My computer turns on but appears to say one thing for computer repair and also appears advisable to start normally. already loaded on both, not by anything. I wonder how to turn it


Go to start if you can boot up. And then select run...type in chkdsk in the run window and hit enter. You computer will scan your hard drives for missing files and/or damaged files and fix it for you. Let me know if this helps.

How do i rest my dell computer to factory settings


Resetting a consumer desktop/laptop to factory settings is fairly straight-forward. Follow the steps below to reinstall the OS and drivers.
Before beginning, here are the items you will need:
A. Computer/laptop B. Microsoft Windows OS CD/DVD
1. Power on your computer. 2. Insert the Windows OS CD/DVD in to the optical drive. 3. Restart the computer and boot from the CD/DVD when prompted. 4. Follow the installation prompts to complete the install. 5. Once completed, eject the CD/DVD and perform a Windows Update to update the system and any drivers you may be missing.

To resolve this issue, start the computer from the Windows XP CD, start the Recovery Console, and then use the Bootcfg.exe tool to rebuild the Boot.ini file. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Configure the computer to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. For information about how to do this, see your computer documentation, or contact your computer manufacturer.
  2. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.
  3. When you receive the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM.
  4. When you receive the "Welcome to Setup" message, press R to start the Recovery Console.
  5. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you have to use from the Recovery Console.
  6. When you are prompted, type the administrator password, and then press ENTER.
  7. At the command prompt, type bootcfg /list, and then press ENTER. The entries in your current Boot.ini file appear on the screen.
  8. At the command prompt, type bootcfg /rebuild, and then press ENTER. This command scans the hard disks of the computer for Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows NT installations, and then displays the results. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to add the Windows installations to the Boot.ini file. For example, follow these steps to add a Windows XP installation to the Boot.ini file:
    1. When you receive a message that is similar to the following message, press Y: Total Identified Windows Installs: 1

      [1] C:\Windows
      Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All)
    2. You receive a message that is similar to the following message: Enter Load Identifier This is the name of the operating system. When you receive this message, type the name of your operating system, and then press ENTER. This is either Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.
    3. You receive a message that is similar to the following: Enter OS Load options When you receive this message, type /fastdetect, and then press ENTER.

      Note The instructions that appear on your screen may be different, depending on the configuration of your computer.
  9. Type exit, and then press ENTER to quit Recovery Console. Your computer restarts, and the updated boot list appears when you receive the "Please select the operating system to start" message.

I want to wipe my computer and take everything back to factory settings with only the programs that wcomes with windows. My computer is a little older but I have a dell and it has windows xp profesional on...


1 Turn on the computer.
During the boot process, a blue bar with www.dell.com appears at the top of the screen.
2 Immediately upon seeing the blue bar, press <Ctrl><F11>.
If you do not press <Ctrl><F11> in time, let the computer finish starting, and then restart the
computer again.
NOTICE: If you do not want to proceed with PC Restore, click Reboot in the following step.
3 On the next screen that appears, click Restore.
4 On the next screen, click Confirm.
The restore process takes approximately 6–10 minutes to complete.
5 When prompted, click Finish to reboot the computer.
NOTE: Do not manually shut down the computer. Click Finish and let the computer completely reboot.
6 When prompted, click Yes.
The computer restarts. Because the computer is restored to its original operating state, the screens that
appear, such as the End User License Agreement, are the same ones that appeared the first time the
computer was turned on.
7 Click Next.
The System Restore screen appears and the computer restarts.
8 After the computer restarts, click OK.

Start up problem with my IBM thinkpad windows XP


type f8 at startup and try last known configuration. if that doesnt work then safe mode. If that doesnt work then try to find a duplicate file (backup), try to find file with dos console - go to windows/system32 and type dir ntoskrnl*.*   so youll find out if there was maybe a copy of this file.  IF you HAVE a Fast PC then sometimes its easier to install a fresh copy of windows, then to search for such errors.

Blue Screen


Use the following steps to replace the missing files when Windows cannot start.

  1. Turn the computer on and place the first recovery disc into the top drive.
  2. After inserting the disc, turn the computer off, wait about ten seconds, and turn the computer on again.
  3. If an HP Recovery screen displays "Press any key to continue...", press the spacebar.
  4. To continue, read the warning screen and click OK.
  5. Click Advanced Options at the top of the screen.
  6. Click Selective Recovery.
  7. Read the Select Files to Restore window that appears.
  8. Type the name of the file. For example, if the error message is MNYUTIL.DLL is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL, type MFC*.DLL.
  9. Click OK. If there is more than one recovery disc, it may be necessary to insert another disc when prompted.
  10. When therecovery process has finished copying files, remove the disc andrestart the computer. If problems, persist it may be necessary toperform a system restore or a non-destructive recovery.

Here is the solution right from Microsoft.

 

SYMPTOMS
When you try to start or restart your Windows XP-based computer, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE

Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate

CAUSE
This issue can occur if the System or Software hive for the Windows XP installation is missing or damaged.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.

Use the Recovery Console Tool
To restore a damaged registry hive, use the Recovery Console to restore the backup copy of the hive from the Repair folder. The Repair folder contains a copy of the system's registry hives that were created after the first successful startup of Windows XP.

WARNING : Although data should not be affected by the following procedure, you may need to restore changes you previously made to programs or system settings since the first time you successfully started Windows XP.

To replace the damaged registry hive and restore the backup copy of the hive from the Repair folder: Start your computer to the Recovery Console.

Determine if the file that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section of this article is present, and if it is, rename it:

In Recovery Console, change to the c:\Windows folder.

Type cd sytem32\config , and then press ENTER.

Type dir system , and then press ENTER.

If you cannot run the preceding command successfully (because the file is missing), skip to step 3. If you can run the preceding command successfully, type ren system system.bak , and then press ENTER.

NOTE : If the message that you received referred to the software file, replace "system" with "software" in the preceding command. For example, you would type ren software software.bak (instead of ren system system.bak ), and then press ENTER.

Type copy c:\windows\repair\system , and then press ENTER.

NOTE : If the message that you received referred to the software file, replace "system" with "software" in the preceding command. For example, you would type copy c:\windows\repair\software (instead of copy c:\windows\repair\system ), and then press ENTER.

You should receive a "One file copied" informational message. For additional information about how to use Recovery Console during startup, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
