I have an odd problem, the TV powers on for about 5 seconds, and all I see is a rainbow screen, no picture at all, it gets brighter, then darker, then shuts off, there is sound, and if you hold down the channel button the TV stays on, even if you're on a channel with picture, you see nothing but a colorful screen, and then it shuts right off. Any ideas at all? I know it's not a degausing problem because the TV wouldn't shut off if it was, I already checked that anyways. Please help me out!

He may have caused some type of damage to the picture tube, but usually rainbow effects happen when magnets are present. Perhaps the ball became charged with a large amount of static, which then discharged across the tube, damaging the controlling circuits.
shadow mask is warped. tv might have been dropped. crt is bad(picture tube). try deguassing it. if you dont know what that is take it to your local service center. the rainbow effect is a magnetic field of some sort. try unplugging and move to a different location. could be a speaker too close to tv.
I just had a rainbow of colors on my tv screen...i thought it was a problem with my TV...however the screen went the "sign off" screen (verticle lines-red/blue/green) Then all of a sudden the picture came back and all was back to normal again.
So I say it's nto your TV it is a station problem!
Usually when a tv is dropped the phospher screen inside the picture tube will detatch making the rainbow color This cannot be fixed as it requires changing the picture tube. Only other thing is demagnatize it with a demagnitizing coil (used by tv techs) but not likely to fix it since it was dropped. You have a bad picture tube.
The description of the problem points to the picture tube being bad because of the rainbow colors,as far as the white lines you might have an open resistor in the crt board,a qualified technician should take care of the problem if the set is repairable and He will know as soon as he sees it.Good luck.
