The start button sends a electric current that starts the motor and latches a relay/solenoid. the relay is damaged and does not latch, it needs to be replaced, is not expensive, and simple to find with the model number given above, at your local parts store. buy the new one first, the store guy will tell you which panel to remove to locate the old one, I am unsure, just remove one wire at a time and place it in the same terminal on the new one.

Runs when PTS held but shuts off when released/no heat

No problem at all.The motor has a start and run winding.Your run winding is bad.The reason you have no heat is the run winding has to run to close the contacts on the motor switch.Replace the motor ,both problems solved. Hope this helps Please rate my response :)

My dryer will not continue running after I release the Start button. Is there a latching relay inside? Does it have an electronic control instead? Could it be a bad moisture sensor? Sears Kenmore...

There is a relay in the control panel. It also has an electronic controller.

There would not be a latching relay, usually the start button energizes a relay, and they use a NO contact wired parallel to the start button.

There should be a schematic in the dryer some place. You'll have to use your voltmeter and test the unit to find out which component is failing.

Dryer start button

The motor switch is not switching over. Either the switch is bad or the dryer is not tumbling fast enough to activate it. Eric

My Kenmore Electric dryer will not run continuously. Once I push the start button it comes on but when I release the button it cuts off. Door is closed and everything seems to be fine otherwise.

Hi, If the motor only runs while the start button is pushed, the motor start winding is going bad. The motor will need replaced to fix your dryer.
Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Must hold start button to run. no heat

disconnect power and remove lid. Test the door switch w a volt meter do so opening and closing the door not pushing switch if circuit stays open try pushing switch with finger. If pushing closes circuit then adjust switch. If circuit stays open replace switch. If switch operates with no problems then it is the motor. Check all connections and vacuum lint from motor
How old is this dryer?
