Question about Microwave Ovens

Sharp R-1450 Microwave Oven - No Power

Here is a bit more detail: Placed the coffee in the microwave to heat. Pressed the start button, a few seconds went by and there was a funny noise and then no power at all.
I saw from another similar post that this could be a shorted high voltage capacitor.
But also checking the door switches and door mounts would be warranted.
Can you provide info on how to do this?
I have worked on computer logic boards changing out components, but very little experience with soldering. Does this repair call for soldering?
Reposting as I am not sure I posted correctly in recent post.
Thanks.

I got the display panel off. I replaced the fuse.
    The power came back.
When I pressed the start button the oven made a humming noise and then shut off.......5 seconds I would say.
    Then the fuse went out.
So if the high voltage capacitor is shorted/failing, how do I get to it?
I am aware that there are pre-cautions I need to take as there are dangerous high voltages.
    Thanks.

(I don't see any other posts from you, so let's stick to this thread)

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

I wouldn't suspect the door switches at this time.

If you or someone you know wants to look into this, we have critical safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

We even have a video on our site that shows you how to safely & easily remove the control panel assembly in under five minutes.

You can probably find exploded views at the Sears parts site. The best place to order Sharp parts is Tritronics.

Please write back with more details if you need further help.

We're happy to help you and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Heat: I placed a microwavable food product in my sharp carousel r-1505. there was a tiny piece of the foil still attached to the rim of the product container. upon start, the foil immediately caught...

Maybe. The presence of metallic material (foil, stainless steel silverware, etc.) in an operating microwave oven creates electric arcs between the foil and the inside wall of the oven. And this can destroy the electric components.

I broke the START button and in order to heat I use the sensor button. Can this be fixed on the microwave? or do I have to replace? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Elaine

The part number for the Start button on this microwave was JBTN-B048MRF0, but it shows as being unavailable.

We may be able to repair it for you, though. Details here.

Microwave not heating, but does count down minutes.

Press clear/reset button and hold 5 seconds. If this doesn't work unplug unit or shut off breaker for 10 seconds.

Sharp R-1510 Start Button Not Working

This may not solve your problem, but on my Sharp R315J microwave, the little plastic pin that pushes forward on the inside of the start button, had broken off and it wouldn't start. The Minute Plus button would start the microwave, so I knew the microwave worked, so I tried to find a piece of plastic that I could glue into the start button hole, because the part doesn't exist and you have to buy the whole door for $100 plus shipping. Nothing I could find was small enough, so I started looking for a new microwave.
While ouside doing lawn work I noticed a small bird tail feather and the end looked to be the perfect size. I snipped off the pointed end and then up about 3/8" to make a little rod to replace the plastic one that broke. It fit perfectly!!! I didn't even have to glue the inside end, it stays put even after repeated door opens. This is sturdy material and looks to last a long time. When it wears out, I have a cat, there's always a few feathers around. I hope this saves someone else a hundred bucks, like it did me.

Sharp Carousel Microwave R-1460A no power, door switch went first

You will want to replace the fuse and door switches. You will not be able to run it without replacing door switches. You do not need a new microwave. Door switches go bad, it has nothing to do with radiation.

Sharp R-510AK Microwave Oven Fuse Blows

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that\'s usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that\'s usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

Here are some links you or a friend can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

Sharp microwave

If it died as soon as you hit the Start pad, it probably has a shorted high-voltage capacitor. If it died a few seconds after you hit Start, it may be a shorted high-voltage transformer. Can you describe in more detail what happened? Have you checked the outlet for power? Have you checked the fuse inside? I'm happy to help you.
