If it came with an install disk, then load the disk in your computer and run the driver / utility installer on it.
Do not plug the printer in to your computer until the utility installer tells you to on screen.
If you don't have an install disk, then go to the printer manufacturer's website and look under the SUPPORT or DOWNLOADS section.
Find your printer model number and download the appropriate DRIVER / UTILITY for whatever operating system you have (Windows XP for example).
Run the driver / utility and follow the instructions as per above.
