Project How did the project with the sorter work out ????

Posted by on

1 Answer

We looked into that and it appeared that we either need to reverse engineer the sorter and control it by a computer, or we need to design our own circuit to drive the motors of the sorter. Since neither of them is easy, the project is currently on hold... Thank you for following up!!

It says error code C0b63 what does it mean

All Cob codes on this series of Minolta copiers pertain to the sorter. Most all of the time you can simply open and close the sorter to reset the code. By open and then close I mean that the sorter must be pulled away from the copier then closed back.
Make sure there is nothing interfering with the movement of the sorter bins.
If opening/closing does not reset the code or if the code comes right back after resetting then the sorter will need service as dis-assembly/repair/re-assembly will be required. You can also unplug the large connector going from the sorter to the machine and use the copier without the sorter. If you have a 10 bin sorter that "hangs" from the side of the machine then you can leave the sorter attached and it will work fine unplugged. If you have the 20 bin sorter that sits on the floor then the sorter will have to be moved away from the copier if unplugged to prevent the machine from jamming. If you unplug the sorter be sure to turn the copiers power off before disconnecting the sorter.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

Please be more specific

Either it is or isn't working!!

Check is set to output to sorter, not face up tray, inspect the equipment is level.

Check switch between copier and sorter for damage and ensure it is making full contact.

Ensure leads for sorter and copier are attached and on at wall

The Staple Sorter feeder has stopped working. The copier works fine but it becomes jammed when it reaches the staple sorter. Remove the sorter and the pages come out.

if you have blower, air blown the whole sorter unit it could be there is a sensor that was dirty or contaminated by dust. hope this will help

A E532 code deals with the sorter. Are the bins moving at all, also try to unjam the stapler. Also have you tried to let the machine warm up with the sorter moved away from the copier? How about this have you tried to turn the copier OFF then disconnect the sorters plug from the back of the copier and turn it back ON with the sorter moved away from the copier. If it works you are all set. I believe your copier is a older model and for the 10 bin sorter that it comes with may not be worth repairing. If it is a 10 bin sorter, it was never a good design from Canon, they work or don't work.. Good Luck...

A question about the feeder

thank you for the complement and for trying to help with your project.

Can a sorter be used ?
Let's see: it seems that you are planning on modifying it to fit your needs.
-changing the bins to container type.
-moving them horizontally

The bins in the sorter are on two cams on each side of the machine that are syncronized.
each bin has a protruding pin on each side that goes into the cams to move it up and down.
sorters were made for vertical movement, to take apart and lay it horizontal.............................

I'm having a difficult time seeing the way you would do all of these without having to re-design the whole system.
as for the electrical part I'm sure if you have the schematics you could by pass and make a board to simulate the signals you need to make it work.

The idea is good, but unless you are willing to re-engineer the whole thing I can't see how it would be more beneficial to you.

Give me a feedback and we'll explore more options.

Can the feeder work without a copier

The problem you will run into is the size of the exited pieces of paper.

Most sorters / finishers use timing sensors (whether it be a timing wheel on lift motors, or photo sensors in paper paths) to determine when to shift positions, and most use separate control boards.

An older 10 / 20 bin sorter that uses gates may be the answer, but again, you will need to figure out how to setup the timing circuit so it knows when each piece exits.

These units will have to be modified to drop the exited pieces vertically in to waiting containers, instead or exiting horizontally onto trays. This may cause even more problems, as most of them rely on gravity itself to hold the exited paper on its feed belts / guides, and the entrance to the unit would then be on the top.

Another problem with this would be the overall size of these things. Remember these sorters / finishers are designed to hold quite a large amount of weight, and the units themselves can be quite heavy.

My best advice is to use something smaller, perhaps a sorting machine for mailing envelopes, or perhaps a modified coin counting device with a "barrel" type of distribution mechanism that you can modify with a slide chutes. If any more ideas come to mind, I will re-post them.

Good luck.
