These types of severe cartridge errors (i.e. "refer to documentation" / "incompatible cartridges", "print cartridge(s) problem" etc.) typically indicates the internal micro-electronics of the HP #21 /22 cartridge are damaged. The cartridge's electrical wire runs at rear and lower side of the ink cartridge are very delicate and are somewhat susceptible to ink attack over time, which can lead to premature failures. In addition, the older the cartridge the higher the chance of an internal electrical failure. I suggest you first run a 'Tap 41' diagnostic test to check cartridges electrical health (this is a forced test); it is also possible to bypass the error (temporarily) on OJ models

For reference/guidance, below are the procedures for printers which use HP 901 cartridge which are similar (I will soon upload procedure for the OJ 5600 series); Inkjet411 youtube videos:

Hewlett Packard HP 2140 how do I re-install the drivers

HP loves to screw with their customers! The software in the printer will not recognize an expired cartridges! Check the expiration date on your cartridge, if expired, replace it. one word of caution! When replacing cart in HP units do so carefully and delicately. There are 2 very small plastic teeth that hold the cart in position, if you break one off you will keep getting a "replace cart" error even though its brand new. Be careful!

There is a problem with the computer sensor in the ink cartridge. That is what is causing this error that you are seeing. Is it a refilled cartridge or did you buy it new from the store? If you bought it new and it is doing this, then take it back to the store and tell them it is a defective cartridge and you want to exchange it for a new one. If it is a refilled cartridge and you bought it from an ink store, take it back to them and tell them that the sensor is failing. They will replace or repair the sensor and then the cartridge should work properly.

Hope this helps?

My HP Officejet 5610 All-In-One InkJet Printer keeps randomly popping up with cartridge error. Take the out then reinsert to no avail. changed with new. still keeps popping up

If the "new" cartridges were brand new HP oem cartridges, there are two things I would do. First, take out the cartridges and inspect the contact area (where the electrical in the printer meets the electrical on the cartridge) and make sure there is no dirt or ink on the contacts. Secondly, remove both of the cartridges, close the lid, and pull out the power cord while the printer is on. Wait at least 10 minutes, plug in, power up and wait until it is done making noises. Open the lid and insert the black cartridge first(important!) and then the color. If this doesn't take care of the issue, replace the printer. (If you're sure the carts were brand-new)

Trying to reload color cartridge.

Many brand name printer cartridges have a code that tells the printer they are a new cartridge. Once the cartridge is empty it will never again tell the printer that is it new.

You can refill the cartridge but it will continue to tell the printer that it is empty.

You say you "had my ... cartridges refilled today" so I suggest you go back to the folks who refilled them and ask them for suggestions.

Otherwise, purchase off-brand cartridges that won't tell the printer they're empty and keep refilling them as needed.

Another approach: purchase a new printer that won't give you this problem. I refill my Lexmark cartridges without any problems.
