You didn't say what kind of typewriter it is or if it only happens on the symbol keys.

When key is depressed it adds a "dash" to type

Your machine has a mechanical part that is either just sticking or needs a small adjustment. The dash (or underscore in upper case) is the character that is preselected when typing. When you hit another character, the machine either adds units or takes them away to give you that specific character. Your machine is not resetting fast enough so it is giving you an extra cycle and that is why you get the dash. A trained IBM technician should be able to resolve this issue for you.

When typing different characters appear. example: type the letter "t" an @ sign would appear. type the letter "j" a % sign would appear.

If you aren't in a language mode or KBII the printwheel homing pawl is probably broken. You need a tech.

If this comes and goes remove the correction tap and try it, if that helps you may have a sticky L/O tape it should be dry.

Try these troubleshooting suggestions for your problem:

Wrong Characters Print or Characters Space Incorrectly:

1. Turn the typewriter off, wait 30 seconds, then turn the typewriter
on again and try typing again.
2. Make sure the LANG indicator is off.
3. Try a new printwheel.
4. Look for objects In the path of the carrier.
5. Make sure the printwheel is changed when there is a language
change.
6. If you are playing back, make sure you use the same pitch
printwheel you used when you typed the text.

IBM Wheelwriter 3 typing incorrect characters

If you have another printwheel try that, if you still have the trouble try blowing out the area where it is in stalled. If that fails turn the machine off then back on, after it completes the POR mark the printwheel with some white out, repeat the POR see if the mark is in the same place, if it isin't you probably have a selection plate problem.
