Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

Chamberlain Liftmaster Professional 1/2 HP

I have a Chamberlain Liftmaster Professional 1/2 HP.

I cannot get the garage door to open all the way. I press the remote control button and the garage door opens only about 2 inches--then it stops...when I press the garage door remote again, it goes down and then automatically goes back up those 2 inches and stops.

My problem started when a piece of wood blocked the key latch preventing the door from going all the way down. It dislodged the chain out of the sprocket. I loosened the chain and put it back. It closes but kicks back to open when it reaches the bottom. I tried tinkering with the screw adjustments facing the house but it got worse. I put the door on manual. The carriage returns when it hits the close end and does not open all the way up. Which screw need to be adjusted and how?

Same problem. Same model and horse power. Door opens 2-4 inches and then just stops. No noises, no running motor, everything just stops. I know the laser is not being tripped, because when that happens, the light blinks to indicate something is in the way. When I assist the door, I have to pull up on it pretty hard, but it will open all the way. Also, if I unlatch the door from the metal plate attached to the chain, everything else runs normally. So it must be bound up, I guess. Funny, since the door has worked without trouble since the house was built more than a decade ago. I should ask the tenants if any of them accidentally bumped the door with their car. I've heard these things are pretty finicky if the metal gets buckled even just a little.

Okay...upon further inspection, my left spring has broken in two. Going to call around for some quotes to replace the spring. Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi, try pulling the emergency release cord, then push the remote button to see if it goes up without the door attached to the lift. If it does, try to open the the disconnected door by hand. If it's very difficult there must be something interfering with the door, or the tracks (rollers). At that point it's a matter of figuring out where it's rubbing, binding, sticking, etc. Let me know how you make out. Countrycurt0

Ok everybody, who has a torsion type door opener? It is round and long and mounted above the door. This is what assists in opening the door and may need to be adjusted to allow the door to be opened with less effort. You should leave that to a garage door person, as there is a LOT of force stored there, and if you don't know what you're doing, you could be seriously injured trying to adjust this. SeanAA, sounds like this could be your problem, as
you said you have to pull pretty hard. Also the fact that it's given you no trouble for a decade, sounds like it's time for an adjustment. ajoven3089, the manual would have all adjustments needed, if you don't have one, you should be able to download it from the manufacturers website. You can help the door opener by lubricating the tracks and rollers w/ something like wd-40 (do it w/ cars out of the garage or they will be hit w/ the overspray. Good Luck Countrycurt0

Garage door will not close from remote or car. Garage door will open from remote or car; however, it will not close using these controls. The only way I can close the garage door is to press on the manual...

Try reprograming the opener to each remote, if this doesn't work then the command/radio module in the opener is damaged and needs to be replaced. Hopefully you can find one or you will have to replace the whole garage door opener. Good luck.

I lost my garage door opener. The "ceiling black box" reads "Liftmaster Professional 1/2 HP". How can I replace this item?

The easiest way is to find a Liftmaster dealer in the yellow pages and call them. They will let you know what information they need. They also should explain to you how to program it without a service call involved. But just in case:

Locate the smart/learn button on the rear of the motor unit near where all those white wires go. Press and hold the button on your new remote while you press and immediately release the smart/learn button.

Does your wall switch have a lock feature? By pressing the lock button, the remote control is disabled. A flashing light indicates this feature has been activated.

To deactivate, press and hold the lock button for 2 seconds. The flashing should stop and your remote should work again.

Sears Craftsman Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model and a LiftMaster Chamberlain Professional Garage Door

I had the same frustrating dilemma with my Craftsman LiftMaster garage door and Keypad, Model 139.53754-01 (dated 10/06; and has the # 315 MHz).

To resolve “the dilemma”, grab your keypad, climb up on a ladder to access the garage door opener’s motor unit. On the right side of the motor unit, remove the white plastic casing by pressing buttons on each side and pulling down. This will expose the programming area, and for our purposes, the “Learn” button.

1. On the motor unit, press and release the “Learn” button. The Learn indicator light will glow steadily for 30 seconds.

2. Within 30 seconds, enter a four digit personal identification number (PIN) of your choice on the keypad. Then press and hold the ENTER button.

3. Release the ENTER button when the motor unit lights blink. The code has been “learned”/stored/activated.

Good Luck, and I Hope this Helps!
For possible future reference:

How to change an existing, known PIN
(Changing an existing PIN can be done with the wireless remote keypad, and does not require access of the motor unit.)

From the keypad:

1. Enter the four digits of the present PIN, then press and hold the # button. The opener light will blink twice. Release the # button.

2. Enter your new 4-digit PIN and press Enter. The motor unit lights will blink once when the PIN has been “learned”/stored/activated. Test by entering the new PIN, and pressing Enter.
