Hello,
For solving your problem do the following
1. Open the cover of the cabinet
2. See the RAM slots inside the board
3. By carefully remove the RAM outside
4. Check the RAM Curves
If there are 2 curves its SDRAM else DDR RAM
5.  If you do not get any clarity, take the RAM to your nearest dealer along with the board type and make.
6. So that the Vendor can suggest.

Hey kmart08,

If you're not quite sure what kind of memory you would need to replace or upgrade your existing configuration, you may wish to first look up your specific model using your Dell service tag through the following link:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/details?~ck=ln&~tab=2&c=us&l=en&lnki=0&s=gen

Once you have entered your service tag, you should be provided with a full, detailed list of the hardware within your computer - including the type and size of the memory stick(s) originally installed. This information may also be available in the owner's manual documentation provided by Dell with your system.

According to information available, Dimension 2400 series computers should be able to use PC2100 (266-MHz) or PC2700 (333-MHz) DDR SDRAM, but you may wish to speak with a Dell tech support representative directly for confirmation.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron

Memory Type: DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 4GB
Slots: 4
Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*
*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.
icon_note.gifAlthough the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules. When using PC2-5300 parts the maximum memory is 2GB. When using PC2-4200 the maximum is 4GB.

You have 4 slots and each slot can support 4 gigs so you can have 16 gigs of ram total. I like corsair or Kingston ram the best. And when you are buying ram you want to look at three things. First is the type of ram which your type of ram is ddr2, second is ram speed which is measure in mhz you want the highest mhz you can get and last is latency, which you want the lowest latency you can get :) hope this helps. Visit newegg.com they have great deals its where i buy all my computer parts from :)

Upgrade ram

In order to upgrade the ram of your desktop. First you have to check the ram specifications. If wrong specifications the desktop will not work. To check you have to remove the ram from your desktop by removing the screws behind your desktop. Open the lid and you will see the contents of your desktop. Besides of your processor, there is ram installed. Unclip it. Then bring that ram to the computer shops. Purchase a ram higher than the ram installed in your desktop. Afterwards, install the new ram to your desktop. Good luck.

Want to buy more RAM..

Your dell dimension takes DDR ram. These are the specs:

Supported pin types: 184 pin DIMM (regular desktop DDR ram)
Supported memory types: DDR PC2700 or DDR PC3200
Supported speeds: 333mhz or 400mhz
Supported stick sizes: 128mb, 256mb, 512mb or 1gb.
MAXIMUM MEMORY ALLOWED: 2gb (2 x 1gb sticks)

If you buy two of these you will max out for ram and give you the best performance::

Xp is not loading memory

You might not have bought the correct memory. I don't know if you use SDRAM, DDR or DDR-2, but there are different types of RAM within those categories. In SDRAM for example there is ECC and non-ECC. One checks errors, the other not, ALL TYPES OF RAM NEED TO BE THE SAME TYPE ECC OR NON ECC.  Also, you may have three slots that take 528MB max for example, put a 1 GB ram into that slot and it aint gonna work. Please let me know what type of memory you had, put in, and type of computer. You can try going to www.cruicial.com if you want to check what type of RAM your motherboard (computer part) will take.
hope this helps. post again if you can't figure it out. PS Try computer recyclers for cheaper ram than Frys or Best Buy.

Installing memory

You can do this if both of your Desktops are using the same memory card or the memory card you need to replace from one to another desktop is supported by both the Desktop boards.
If you have not sure you can provide me the Model No for both the Desktops for more precise solution.
