Returning the computer to Gateway is the most reliable option, but unless you have the premium grade warranty this will be expensive.
You can buy a replacement from Best buy, but if it is for a laptop I would recommend either an external modem or a PCMCIA modem. Opening up a laptop is a job for an expert. If you have a desktop/tower PC then you can buy an external or an internal Modem, Only but the Internal modem if you feel confident about opening up the PC. The external modem is the safest to buy. You will need to check what connections you have on the back of your PC either a serial connector or nowadays a USB connection. Make sure the modem you buy is appropriate to the service you use e.g. dial up or DSL. The assistant in Best Buy should be able to help you with that.

This should fix it .

How can i get internet wireless

Hi:
If you have the modem already installed and running all you need is a wireless router, you can buy it at any best buy or computer store. If you like to get by internet follow the link:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_8?field-keywords=wireless+router&url=search-alias%3Daps&sprefix=wireless

Choose the one you need. ( a cheap one will be good ). Once you get it, just plug it in and follow instructions on the disc that came with it.
Best regards,
David

Modem and router together not working. Did though.

Believe it or not the average router lives about 6-18 months before it start it downward spiral. Any router over 2 years old needs to be replaced or you will just keep messing with it until you finally go get the new router out of frustration.... OH, dont buy any "G" series routers. They will be antiques in a short time. "N" series is what you want. In addition make sure any new modem you buy is DOCSIS 3.0 or better. Walmart sell a couple of modems but they will not be compatible with the higher speeds coming soon. No, firmware cannot be updated to 3.0 as it is a hardware and software thing for 3.0. Be well

Can this modem work on a gateway laptop?

No... wait...

Do youe a dial-up service? or do you have a cable network?
This modem is for a cable system, like Comcast or Time Warner.

If you need a dial-up modem like the one in your laptop, then obtain a USB modem from Best Buy, Fry's, Office MAX/Depot:
like a "Zoom" or "SupraMax" or "US Robotics" brand, 56K v.92 modem.

Need to get wireless on my laptop,

No, the SB5100 is just a cable modem, not a wireless router. You will need to keep your sb5100 but you will need to purchase a wireless router if you want wireless on your laptop. If you can also plug your laptop into the sb5100 via an ethernet cable for your internet connection. Linksys and Belkin and others make wireless routers that you can use for your wireless connections.

2wire 2701HGV-W Gateway wi-fi modem

The 8200 by itself does not have networking capability.
This means that you cannot connect it directly to your router and give it an IP address, so others can connect to it.

The good thing is, that this printer is listed on the list for compatibility for upgrade with the wireless network kit (see here). The bad thing is - this kit costs about 70$ (see here).

A solution which does not cost anything, is to share the printer from your computer with the other computers. The downside is that the machine to which the printer is connected has to be running in order to let the others print.

If you decide to buy the Networking Kit - here are the setup instructions.

Sorry - but there is no simple (plug & pray) solution.

Wifi

You need to purchase a wireless router. The router will have 5 ports on the back, one in and 4 out. The wire that you have going from your modem to your computer will go to the "in" port on the router. The out ports can be used for wired connections, and the wireless antenna will connect to any wireless computers.

Any computer that you want to connect wirelessly to your new router will need to be wireless-ready. For a desktop computer, you will need to buy and install a wireless PCI network card. Most laptops have built-in wireless.

You can buy a wireless router at most "big box" stores, like Best Buy, Office Depot, even WalMart sometimes carries them. A wireless router will cost between $75 and $150.

Cable modem

Go and buy a router. Plug your existing modem into the WAN port and your computers into the LAN port. You could even get a wireless router and connect your upstairs computer wireless. Be sure to lock down your SSID (Wireless Access Point Broadcast Name) so your neighbors or people driving by don't get on and do bad things on your network.

V.92

You probably don't have to buy a new modem. The phone companies equipment will most likely be backward compatible. Meaning that there systems should work with V92. If you are in an area where you can get some kind of broadband it would make much more sence to arrange that. If you don't have broadband access you would probably not benefit much by buying a new modem. Unless of course the phone equipment for some reason is not backward compatable. The chance of that is slim. Voiceband modems will only support 53 kbps actual rates for downloads depending on conditions of the line and other factors. They are limited to this speed by the FCC in The United States and limited in Canada as well. hope this helps.
