Question about Northland D48 / G48 Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Northland 48" side by side is too warm

Both freezer and refrigerator are too warm (ice cream melting, etc). I turned it off after removing averything since one time a repairman had said that there may be ice in the wall in between and it would need to be defrosted. Today I do notice some water leaking from somewhere on the floor under it (not a lot though) and the front metal part of the wall in between the two sides is very hot with nothing on (no lights, nothing). A friend said to try to find an energy saver switch and turn it off, but I cannot find any. We have had really bad luck with repair people not to mention a whole lot of expense. Can you help or make any suggestions????

If you have this unit for a long time, maybe you need Freon for the compressor. you can not do it yourself.

Freezer is not even keeping ice cream from melting..and the 2 slots at the top in the back by the top shelf?? Are filled with IVE

Do an old fashioned dethaw of your icemaker. Remove food in compartment, unplug or turn off freezer. Leave doors closed, and get a thick towel and a pot of boiling water. Place the towel under the pot, close the door, and let the heat from the pot warm up that frozen freezer vent. That will clear the ice so the fan can draw cold air out into the freezer

Freezer side is freezing and refrigerater is warm

You have an Iced up freezer there...is the freezer "packed full of stuff?" If so you are blocking all of the vents that cool the fridge...The freezer section of a refrigerator is responsible for keeping the freezer frozen and the frige cool...air passes between the two compartments via the settings you set on those dials "a b c etc." Take everything out of the freezer and stick it all in coolers or something for a couple of hours see if there is ice built up around the vents at the sides and bottom of the freezer compartment. If so, the freezer needs to be "de-iced" normally this is accomplished automatically via heaters placed here and there throughout the fridge...So this may also be a source of your problem. if the heating element is bad, it would allow ice to form...I can also assume that the airflow from the fan in the freezer is "weak at best" meaning it is also full of ice... You can melt the ice with a hairdryer and some time of course...but be thorough with it. If you have a heat gun even better, just don't get it too close to the plastic or you will melt it. hope i've helped a bit...let me know what you find in there

The freezer has been melting ice-cream

The first thing to do is, give it a FULL DEFROST, the old fashioned way. set it for defrost or unplug it and melt all of the ice out of the air tunnels below and behind the freezer. In the refrigerator section, you will find a hole that you can stick your finger into, normally in the wall next to the freezer. This has the defrost timer in it. Give it a full turn CLOCKWISE to make sure the contacts aren't stuck. When you are sure all the ice is melted and the water has been dried up, power it back up. It will run properly if nothing actually went bad. The next step, if it doesn't work right, is to replace the thermostat.

You could have something as simple as frozen evaporator due to defrost system malfuntion, bad compressor electricals or failed compressor. I believe the sealed system in that unit comes with a good warranty. I would contact Connie at the factory, 800-223-3900. She can help you find a servicer to repair it and also provide any further troubleshooting assistance you need. You can also find servicers in your area by visiting their web-site www.northlandnka.com in the support area.
