The easiest way is to open the case and find the sound card, there should be a sticker on it telling you what type of card it is. Sound cards do not usually get plug and play detected.

"An error occurred in the audio output settings. Please check that the sound driver is set up properly." This is the prompt that comes up when I try to play any dvd.

well, you need to simply update the audio drivers. for that u need to know the model make of your computer/laptop. if its a assembled pc with integrated sound card, know the mother board model, and if its a separate sound card, get to know the sound card model/make.
visit the manufacturers website and download audio driver. and install it.

No sound driver

You will need to go on the DELL web site and try and download the sound drivers, under the Driver downlads. You will need to know what model you have in order to find the correct drivers. Let me know if you need help. I will require the model number of the computer and also if i's onboard or if it is a card inserted into the motherboard, known as a PCI sound card.

Hi,
First of all you need to find out what sound chip you have on your motherboard. Download and install PC Wizard and click onto the loudspeaker icon. This should give you all the info you need about your computer. If you still cannot locate a suitable driver on the web come back and I will have a look for you.

PC wizard download is at the bottom of the page.

Missing Sound Device

Possibilities are that sound driver might have been corrupted during restore.
So try reinstalling the driver from the mother board's driver cd.
It should do the job for you.

Rarely the worse happens when the mother board's sound card is corrupted, even so you can add an adiitional sound card to mother board and can get back the sound..

But mostly it is the first situation you are facing,.. so reinstalling the sound card driver should do the job for you. It is only the software oriented problem

If you go to your pc manufacturer's web site and enter your model number, they will have driver downloads for the audio card that you have.  If you tell me the make and model for your pc I'll be able to find it.
