Question about Amana AFD2535DES French Door Refrigerator

Auot defrost problem?

I have an Amana bottom freezer frig. Last Wed. we noticed that the freezer was running much colder but hadn’t changed the temperature control on it. I read the manual and it suggested cleaning the condenser coils, which I did by vacuuming out the debris. There was a large amount of pet hair and dust; we had never cleaned them before and we’ve had the frig for 2 years.

About 12 hours later we noticed that the refrigerator was running a bit warm, and by the next morning we realized that there was no cool air flow to it at all. We checked the evaporator coils and they were clearly frosted up, which was constricting the air flow to the frig, so we defrosted the freezer and started the unit back up again.

We had good air flow to the frig and it cooled down to its normal temp, below 40 F. A few hours later I checked the freezer and saw that it was going through an auto defrost cycle. The frost was clearing melting and draining out of the freezer. The rest of the night it seemed to run fine and I checked it this morning and the frig was holding below 40 F. There was frost on the evaporator but I’m guessing the next defrost cycle was due in about 2-4 hours.

Does it sound like I am all set or could there still be a problem with the auto defrost? If so, what part of it? It seems like the timer is working. Could cleaning the condenser coils have caused it to frost up really fast? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Cleaning the condensor is nothing to do with evaporator freezing up. keep an eye on it - you may have a problem with the defrost cycle. problem can also happen if freezer door has been left open

You have a defrost problem. You will need to replace your defrost system. Before you put the parts on, you need to completely thaw out your unit. You can do this by leaving it open all day or night or by placing a fan close to it with the door open. We have parts, so please give us a call and we'll be sure to ge the right parts out to you right away. We look forward to hearing back from you.
