Cd not recognized

That only means that the cd/dvdrom is already failing. if this happens to not 1 cd/dvd, then its failing. but if it only happens to 1 particular cd, then that means that the cd might have the problem, try another computer to read the contents of that cd, and try to transfer the data to a flash drive.
And its not visible on your BIOS.

Can't access CD

If you mean the drive won't open then
Turn off computer
Locate a small hole in DVD drive lid.
Carefully insert a straightened paper clip.
Gently push & the lid should pop out.
Then you can open the drive & remove the CD
Restart the computer and see if it opens normally and reads dvd's now.

If you mean Windows won't read it then the drivers may need re-installing. Check in hardware manager to see if Windows recognizes it or shows an error for it.

Computer no recognize CD-ROM Drive

If it is a "swappable" device, then first shut-down your computer. Remove the other device that currently is installed in the drive-bay. Insert the CD-ROM drive, and restart your computer, so that it can detect the "new" hardware.

My computer is asking for a specific command when trying to install a fix it utilities program. it reads "Your CD-ROM drive is X:"

in this case you have to manually select the cd -drive ...so ...browse and select the drive where the installer cd is ....if you are using an image with a virtual cd drive ( like daemon ) select the drive where the files run ...cause probably it doesn't recognize the path

Compaq V2000 - Service Tag V2220US Only recognizes the CD/DVD drive as "CD" Does not see it as a DVD Drive. Listed as: _NEC DVD+-RW ND-6500A in Device Manager.

Try updating your drivers from www.hp.com

If the issue is that it won't play DVD movies only then you probably need to install or re-install the DVD player software that should have come with your computer. If you don't have it anymore, simply download from HP.

CD drive wont read blank or music CDs

It sounds like the drive is ready for replacement. It may be that the laser lens is dirty so the drive never detects a disc, or it's gotten too weak from age and use. Replacement drives are very cheap, so the best thing to do is replace the drive. You can get a DVD burner now at Newegg (www.newegg.com) for $25.99.

My cd/dvd opens then closes

> I've already replaced it once

Well, I've seen CD-drives that would re-open, when you try to close them -- it is _falsely_ detecting a "jam" as the tray is closing, and then just re-opens the tray, rather than "forcing" itself to close.

Replacing the CD-drive is the only way to fix that type of "false-positive" jam-detection conditions.

But, since you've done that, either you were unlucky-enough that the replacement drive was also "defective", or, you have a computer-virus on your computer that is maliciously issuing commands to the CD to "open-the-tray".
