The current motherboard for my desktop compaq presario s4010om can only hold 1 gig. I would like to know if there are other motherboards out there with the same dimensions and upgradeable to at least 2 gigs, that would work in this housing.

Compaq's use proprietary hardware, and sometimes even their connectors don't match the standard motherboards. That's how they get people to come back to them for parts.Sell the tower and put the money towards a new unit.
You can get faster computers with 3-4 GB. memory, and high-capacity hard drive for $300-$600 from Dell :

or from Wal-mart:

What is the best upgrade cpu for a compaq presario sr5110nx 32 bit vista O.S... ATHLON 64 (single core) without having to go to 64 bit, and/or new drivers ?

The 400W PSU is going to limit your CPU selection to dual-core at best, although you might be able to get away with a higher-end dual-core CPU if your RAM is not ECC and not dual-channel, and you're not running anything serious in terms of a graphics or sound card or a SCSI array.

Given your current setup I'd really look for a 1.6Ghz dual-core Athlon which has a decent amount of KB in its Level 1 and Level 2 cache, but 3MB for its Level 3 cache.

Anything beyond that ballpark of a CPU upgrade is certainly well within the bounds of diminishing returns, and you should look at getting a new PSU, motherboard, and probably RAM (I'm guessing you're using DDR2 RAM currently).

Supported Motherboard Models for upgrade on Compaq Presario 5186 Desktop Computer?

Form factor is your main concern. This dictates screw holes and case alignment. ATX standard is the most common over counter mobo.

I need a list of compatible video cards that can be installed to upgrade the computer to make it run smoother and assist with games, I also need to know what processors can be installed in it ato upgr

I hope you realize the manufacturer recommends a maximum of 1GB of RAM in this system.

Since the system only has PCI slots, any kind of PCI video card should work without a problem.

Help Upgrading Processor

You'll find the information you seek at both the processor company and the motherboard company. As for remounting it in a Compaq case you may run into some issues of the On/Off Switch, power lead, reset button ect...matching up. You might be suprised at how inexpensive a new computer case is. I've seen some as low as $25. Your power supply can be removed and it will fit in your new case. You may just have a easier go of it. Good luck...please leave a rating, thank you kindly

Have a compaq presario sr2170nx....installed 1 gb memory but not showing up. swapped the memory sticks positions and restarted but still wont show up.

If you do not get the right memory for your computer it will not work. the memory you need is listed in the table below. And pay attention to the max amount of ram. Your system can only hold 2 gig and it comes with one gig installed

Want to up grade my cpu and ram to improve speed and program use.

Question#1 is my current processor duel core or single core , how can I know?

Intel Celerons are Single Core. You can also download and run CPUID (free) from http://www.cpuid.com/ No installation needed either , just run it!

Question#2 What kind of duel core processor in combination with new ram should I install?

I dont think your computer supports dual core. I cannot be sure without you giving me the make and model of the motherboard. Besides , a 3.33ghz Celeron D is a great processor!!!!

Memory - See http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Presario%20SR2150NX you can have a max of 2gb. You have 2 slots on the motherboard so its 1 gb per slot and the board takes DDR2 PC2-5300.

Here , you can expand to your max of DDR2 PC2-5300 2gb (2x1gb) for $24 and theres free shipping too!!!
