My SanDisk Sansa c250 MP3 player can't get past the refresh database screen for the external microSD memory card when I turn it on.

I have exactly the same problem. The memory card expansion had been working fine, but suddenly stopped. It appeared as a consequence of one of two things:
1) I used a non-manufacturer cable to charge and transfer data;
OR
2) I deleted songs on the external device using a 'format' command.
