Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

External Hard drive 750 gb does not meet the storage capacity as describe

The external hard drive750gb "MY BOOK" , Western Digital brand I bought from Best Buy does not meet the storage capacity as describe. When I check the storage capacity on my notebook, it stated that the hard drive capacity is only 698 gb.
I call Best Buy help services and they told me that they will charge me $159.99 for home services, $39.99 for store services and $7.99 for phone services to help me install my hard drive. Why are they charging me for these services when the truth is I only have to plug in the USB?
What should I do?

Hi scotti0619,

The answer to this question is spelled out by the manufacturer, Western Digital, at http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=615&p_created=1034613413&p_sid=coT55l9j&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MzEsMzEmcF9wcm9kcz0yMjgsMjA5LDIyMiZwX2NhdHM9JnBfcHY9My4yMjImcF9jdj0mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9mbmwmcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1mb3JtYXR0ZWQgY2FwYWNpdHk*&p_li=&p_topview=1.

The capacity you are seeing is alcuatlly measured in a binary (base 2) system rather than the simplistic base 10 system of 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. In binary measurement, 1 GB = 1,073,724,841 bytes. Thus, 750 GB in base 10 = 698.47 GB in base 2. You are likely getting the full capacity from your drive, but it is simply being looked at on a different scale.

Thank you,
Jason,

Why is my files on my external hard drive in my computer the space volume is the color red instead of blue

When the volume information has turned Red instead of Blue, it's because the drive has less that 15% capacity left, files will be read faster when there is a minimum of 15% free storage on a drive.

Tells me I don't have enough hard drive space

I would first check the capacity of your external hard drive. From "My Computer", right-click the drive letter of the external drive and select Properties. Make sure that the drive has the amount you need in *free* space - it's possible that it's just full with other files.

If this is the first time you're using this drive, you may need to format it before it will recognize its own capacity. Right-click the drive letter and select Format.

Capactiy of external hardrive

That's normal. Storage manufacturers consider 1 GB at 1 billion bytes (1,000,000,000 bytes).

Computers, however, use base-2 arithmetic, and one kilobyte is 1024 bytes, one megabyte is 1024 kilobytes, and one gigabyte is 1024 megabytes. This all multiples to 1 gigabyte according to the computer is 1024^3 or 1,073,741,824 bytes.

Take 320,000,000,000 and divide it by 1,073,741,824 and you get 298.023223876953125, so your computer says your "320GB" drive is 298GB.

There's a standard for base-2 (binary) measurement terminology (gibibytes, mebibytes, kibibytes, etc), but few people seem to use it.
