SOURCE: what is optiplex gx 260 pc's default bios

I have worked on hundreds of Dell computers and they never set a bios password so there is no such thing as a default password.

The usual way of clearing the bios password is to open up the computer and do one of two things.
1. take out the small round battery on the mother board. Then power the computer up, wait 30 seconds. Turn the computer off and replace the battery. OR
2. look for a jumper on the mother board that says "clear bios" set the jumper, turn on the computer, wait 30 seconds, turn off the computer and then reset the jumper.

How to reset or remove BIOS password

There are four common categories of solutions to remove or reset a BIOS password and here are the details on how to go about resetting your BIOS password.<br /> <br /><b>Manufacturer Backdoor BIOS Password</b><br /><br />Most of the BIOS makers have set a backdoor password on the older computer models. That is the master password for BIOS. To reset BIOS passwords first you need to check the manufacturer of your computer's BIOS. Most computers have BIOS include AMI, IBM, Award, and Phoenix. These are the most common BIOS. You can unlock your locked BIOS using this master password. It works, no matter what the user sets the password to. Many popular computer and laptop manufacturers such as HP and DELL lock the BIOS because they want to protect their machine's most sensitive areas (those areas which have warranty) from their customers. These passwords are usually used by computer technicians for testing and repairing. <br /><br /><b>Reset the jumper that holds the password<br /></b><br />Open the computer and locate on the motherboard the BIOS password jumper. The jumper is usually jumper 1 and often labeled as PSWD, PWD, CLRPWD, CLEAR, JCMOS1, CLR, CLEAR CMOS, PASSWD, or PASSWORD. Normally you would have 3 pins and to reset the password you just need to put the jumper on the 2 and 3 pins leaving pin 1 empty. After you move the jumper, turn the computer on to clear the password, then once password removed turn it off and put the jumper back to its original position.<br /><br /><b>Removing the CMOS Battery to reset the BIOS to default</b><br /><br />Switch off your computer, and open up the case. You'll see a circular metallic silver item on motherboard. This is called CMOS Battery. Remove it carefully, and leave it out for about 2 minutes. This act will remove the CMOS memory which contains BIOS password. Set the CMOS battery back and switch on the computer. Restore the CMOS configuration as default. Your BIOS password has been cleared now. <br /><br /><b>Using third party software utility to reset BIOS password</b><br /><br />To reset BIOS you can use third party software like Kill CMOS which wipes out CMOS, or CmosPwd which is a BIOS utility. Hiren's Boot CD has a few programs including the above two that will help you to reset the password. Here is a link to Hirens Boot CD website <a href="http://www.hirensbootcd.org/">http://www.hirensbootcd.org/</a>. To download the latest version, click on the Download link on the left side and go to the last page. You will need a CD writer to put the content on a blank CD.

Bio's Password reset for gateway 98 desktop

BIOS passwords can be reset or removed in two ways:

1. using software 2. using hardware.

1. Software removal method - Here are two software apps to reset or retrieve BIOS passwords.

!BIOS - is a PC BIOS toolkit offering password removal/decrypt and BIOS settings modification/backup/restore.
You can download it here:
http://www.syschat.com/download120.html&act=down

CmosPwd - Cmos password recovery tools
http://majorgeeks.com/CmosPwd_d239.html

You will need to create a bootable Dos, or Linux or NT cd in order to run them.

2. Hardware Removal method :
- First you need to open the case.
- Then find the cmos battery (It will look like a nickel sized silver disk located on the motherboard).
- Remove the cmos battery for 30 seconds and then put it back in. You may have to tweak the bios settings afterward, but the password will be gone.

Good Luck!

Acer Travelmate 5530 BIOS password reset needed

Ran into same problem with 5530 Travelmate and found the Gap terminal by process of elimination is G69. It is located about 1/2 inch to the top right of Ground#8 about 3 inches below the sync fan. It is not well marked (G69 notation is well to the left), but is distinct in that it is 2 triangular orange terminals. I had to scratch the surface a bit and it took 2 or 3 tries to get it, but it finally worked. PC will power right back down when you get it right, next time you restart password is cleared. F2 from post verified no password existed anymore.

My acer laptop travelmate 2413lmi demanded for a password. i`ve not been able to pass through this stage despite all efforts.Right now the system can not boot without the password.

Hello capstone08,

Can you tell me which version of BIOS you have on your laptop, AWARD BIOS, AMI BIOS, PHOENIX BIOS, etc? If you have AWARD BIOS, here was a universal password for some versions of Award BIOS .The password is: AWARD_SW

Try THIS link, or THIS ,they may help..

If you know how to open up your laptop and reassemble it, you can try to remove the CMOS battery for about 15-20 mins to reset the password. The CMOS battery looks almost like watch battery...Once your BIOS password is removed, you will need to press the <F2> key during POST (Power On Self Test) to enter the Acer BIOS setup.

if all else fails, you may have to send it to an ACER repair depot, for which they will charge you $100.
Here is a copy of an email from Acer Support:
"Thank you for contacting Acer America. I apologize for the delay in responding to your inquiry. In order to have the BIOS or hard disk password removed (This include any biometric security), the notebook will need to come in to our repair depot for password removal. This service is not covered by warranty and unfortunately there is no other recourse to remove a BIOS or HDD password from the notebook. The flat fee for BIOS password removal is $100.00 US dollars plus tax. If it is a BIOS or HDD password and you would like us to service it for you, please contact our telephone technical support line at 1-800-816-2237. Hours of operation are 7am-9pm CST Monday-Friday and 8am-5pm CST Saturday and Sunday, excluding holidays."

Hope that helps...Should you have any further questions, please feel free to post them here.
P.S. Before you assign a rating, please make sure that the issue is resolved or you are satisfied. If not, please post back as to what you did, and/or any other questions you may have, and I will try to assist you as best I can. Please do not assign an ‘Inappropriate’ or ‘Thanks for trying’ rating if your issue is not resolved after the first response itself, as sometimes a bit of to and fro dialogue may be necessary before we can find a fix or an answer to your query.

If you find that the solution/answer I provided led you to, or resulted in a fix, please close the ticket with a FixYa! or Helpful rating. I would be very grateful for your show of appreciation.

Thank you for using FIXYA!

Cheers!
