SOURCE: slight RGB alignment problem

We had the same problem, and it seemed to fix itself when we did the following (not sure exactly what it was we did, but it worked):
1) Remove the outer box on the right side (one by the lens), rear, and top. (you'll need a T9 torx screw driver with a long shaft as the first 4 screws are on the bottom under the rubber feet and caps on the front corners of the bottom.)
2) On the top is a board that has 3 orange cables coming out of it as well as some others. We completely removed that board and reinstalled it.
3) We determined that the 3 orange cords control the color out put.
4) So leaving all of the outer sides off, when we reconnected the board and provided power, the image came out properly aligned.
5) We're now struggling w/color. Based on how you insert the orange cords you get different color saturation. We seem to be missing a proper/consistent red display.
6) But the colors are all aligned and the image clear. We're getting there . . . .

Be very careful!!! You could electrocute yourself.

The adjustment requires disassembling the projector. It's not really something that should be attempted in the field.

Accessing Service menu to fix convergence

How far off are the colors misaligned such that you need to enter the service mode to fox them? If one or more of your colors has taken a dramatic shift in position, especially on any edge, then do not attempt to correct through the menu. If one of your convergence IC's has failed then the colors will not align on the screen. If you try to correct this in the menu, you will only be screwing up all the settings and making the set worse. When the IC is replaced with a new one your colors will still be way off, not because the new IC is not working, but because now the menu settings are too far off. I have been to many houses and spent 45 minutes replacing a burned out convergence IC followed by more than an hour realigning everything the customer messed up.

My picture is suddenly distorted. It looks as though a bulb is suddenly out of alignment. It is nothing the convergence controls will fix. How do I open the TV without breaking something so see what is...

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

Convergence problems, can't find any access to adjust via menus.

NO !! You can't adjust that out. You have a convergence failure. You need to take it to a shop. You won't be able to fix it yourself. The more you adjust it the more ANY shop is going to charge you to fix it. Let me know how it turns out.

Sony KP-51HW40 Convergence issue

Can you adjust the convergence by the convergence menu without going through the service menu? The settings through the convergence menu should save automatically. Have you replaced the convergence ICs? If so the settings should save, if not the D board will need to be replaced or at the very least rebuilt. Let me know if you need further assistance with this issue.
