My remote is a bowtie big button remote and i cannot get it to program to a sylvania tv model 6420ff

Try the codes for other Sylvania TVs. You'll find they work just as well.

Code search. Hold down code search button until on-off light flashes then stays lit. keep pressing the on-off button until the power to your tv goes off, then hit the enter button. your remote should be set to your tv!

The code you require depends on the manufacturer of the remote. Do you have the model number for the remote there please.
