I have the same thing happening with my HP Pavillion DV4000. Unfortunately every one of the options only goes to a blank "black" screen. I never get to option to delete any drivers or roll back to a previous driver. A day before this happened, I added a driver for the wireless adapter. That worked and I was able to connect to the internet with no problems. FYI...we have a damaged internal DVD drive (for some time now). When I close the dvd drive the computer attempted to restart, but now I can only get to the prompts as described earlier. I would remove the driver but can't get far enough in to do so. Can a damaged dvd drive cause a problem with start up?

The reason it does this is because a program was interrupted before it finnished or a incorrect driver was installed.start up in safe mode to repair the problem.if you know of a new driver youve just installed either roll back to previous driver or delete it.
if unsure use check disk.when done restart.pc

If done properly the user should get to a screen similar to the below screen. Select the option for Safe mode command prompt only Windows Advanced Options Menu
Please select an option: Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
Debugging Mode Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice. Select safe mode with command prompt then type in chkdsk/f/r which will scan for and and attempt repair of bad files and bad sectors on hard drive You should have no input while chkdsk utility is in progress any input might further damage your computer also Use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to determine which file is causing the issue and then replace the file. Type the following command and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

How to go in safe mode?

Hello,

to go into safe mode, turn on your computer and constantly press F8 immediately. You will press the F8 button at the first black screen, that is, when your computer displays its log.

While pressing the F8, a windows option will be the next screen to appear, amongst the windows option, you will see safe mode there, use your keyboard arrow key to scroll to safe mode and press enter.

By now, your computer should be loading on safe mode.

Good luck.
