Shouldn't be that hard. Disconnect all power sources, including the battery, open it up, pull out the CMOS, and put a new one in. You're done.

If the Date & Time changes back to some previous date when you next boot up the computer then the CMOS battery is worn out and needs to be replaced. After replacing the CMOS battery go into the BIOS and set the Date 7 Time.

"time-of-day clock stopped" comes up

There are two possibilities. The first possibility is that the CMOS battery has died (sometimes happens even on newer machines). These batteries don't cost that much, but sometimes these batteries aren't the easiest to get to. If the computer is under warranty, you may want to have Dell replace the battery. You can find the service manual here if you want to replace the CMOS battery yourself: http://support.ap.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos1014/en/index.htm This service manual refers to this battery as the "coin cell battery." Step by step instructions are here: http://support.ap.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos1014/en/SM/AD_Coin_Cell.htm
The second possibility is that a motherboard component has gone bad and (the motherboard) needs replacing. One would certainly hope that the laptop is under warranty for this.

Is there a patch to fix the clock error? my vostro does not keep time when shut down

Date & Time are kept by RTC (Real Time Clock) CMOS Battery, which is usually a coin-cell battery on the motherboad.
As the RTC of your system is dead, it can not keep time.
Therefore, RTC (CMOS Battery) is required to be replaced with a new one to fix the issue.
Refer here for more information/ disassembly guide.

Let me know if any further clarification is required. Hope this helps! Dont forget to rate the solution!!

Dell inspiron 1545 laptop (Time- of- date clock

This could mean two things: a problem with the cmos battery or the motherboard itself. Try to remove the cmos battery first and install. If not, then replace the cmos battery.

Clock not keeping correct time

The CMOS battery keeps the laptop configuration stored in the CMOS chip and the main battery has no effect on the CMOS.
If the date and time drift off, it indicates the CMOS battery is nearly flat and needs to be replaced.
If you had ticked the Daylight saving box in the Time Zone tab in Control Panel - Date and Time setting then the time would automatically adjust for Daylight saving.
