Question about Toshiba Satellite A205-S4617 Notebook

Toshiba A205-S5819 Can't connect to wireless internet

I'm not sure if it's my laptop settings, something to do with Vista, or the router. My wifi works just fine at home or anywhere else I go, however I'm visiting somewhere else, and can't seem to connect to their internet. I can connect to the network, but cannot get through to the internet. I turned off my firewall and tried resetting the computer, the router, but can't seem to get anywhere. Other laptops can connect to the internet, but they have windows xp or mac. But with Vista, I can only get access if I manually plug it in via eithernet to the router, but no luck with wireless. Anybody have anything?

I can get it to work if I manually plug it in, do you know if this makes a difference or not?

  • yseent Jul 20, 2008

I've searched everywhere online (at least that I can think of?) to see if the router (Encore ADSL+2) is compatible with vista or not, and I'm not sure if I"m looking int he right place, but how do I find this out?

The router you're trying to acess may not be set up for Vista or may not be compatible with Vista. I had to upgrade the router at my shop in order to work on Vista OS machines.

This does make a difference. The ethernet configurations have stayed the same, the problem is in the wireless router configuration. The configuration is why I had to upgrade the wireless router at my shop, so I could address issues concerning wireless machines with Vista and check to be sure the wireless was working after a system reload.

Tip

How to Connect a Laptop to a Wireless Router

  • 1 Purchase a wireless router that fits your needs and price range.
  • Follow the router's manual to set up the router and its Internet connection, which will probably require connecting a wired client to the router. Once the wireless router is set up, the wired connection is no longer necessary. However, it's best to leave the wired client connected if it's a separate computer from that on which you're going to set up WiFi. If something goes wrong, you can access the administration interface again.
  • Gather information from the setup process. In order to set up the wireless client, you will need to know the service set identifier (SSID), the Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) key and the channel and mode.
  • Boot up the laptop and plug in the WiFi card. This will not be necessary if your laptop has an integrated WiFi card.
  • Install any drivers needed to use the WiFi card. Insert the disc that came with the WiFi card and follow the on-screen installation process. Most discs will trigger a new hardware wizard that makes installation extremely simple.
  • Double-click on the "WiFi Connection" icon. It can be found in the system tray at the bottom of the laptop screen.
  • Click on "Properties."
  • Select the "Wireless Networks" tab.
  • Use the "Add" button at the bottom of the dialog if your WiFi network isn't in the "Avable Networks" section.
  • Click on "Configure" when you see your network's SSID in the "Available Networks."
  • Enter your network's SSID and WEP key.
  • Click on "Start," then choose "Connect To" and "Wireless Network Connection." Your computer should now be able to access the WiFi network. If the WiFi network is connected to the Internet, it should also be able to connect to the Internet.

My toshiba satellite laptop want connect tothe internet

It could be a couple things: 1. Try connecting using the wired connection if you can. If it works, then problem most likely with wireless. 2. Try connecting wirelessly maybe using a public WIFI hotspot or a friend's connection. That will rule out your router. 3. It could be a browser issue: Start / Run / Inetcpl.cpl and then check the Internet settings. Make sure there are no proxy settings set.

If you are sure the internal wifi card is no good then you can use an external pc card (pcmcia)that plugs into the side (make sure you have the driver) try a few things first
If your trying to get on the internet with a wireless connection.and running WINDOWS, .and I am assuming you DO have a wireless router all set up and configured to broadcast the signal (not hidden) ....first we have to determine if the problem is at the router or at the laptop AND at what point its getting stuck ... so first try this

try resetting the router (unplug for a few minutes) try --be sure the wifi switch is enabled on the netbook---try---go to CONTROL PANEL>NETWORK CONNECTIONS--right click oin your wifi card and choose properties--highlight INTERNET PROTOCOL and choose properties and be sure "OPTAIN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY" is checked--Does the laptop "SEE" the router?
You will need your SSID to logon to the router(internet)

Need ESSID and WEP info for a Toshiba Satellite A205

The users guide for your laptop won't have information about ESSID or WEP for any wireless networks you are trying to connect to. SSID is Site Security Identification. That is the name of the wireless network you are connecting to and WEP is Wired Equivalent Privacy and is a key that is set up on the wireless network that if you don't know that key you can't use that wireless network even if you know the SSID. Each wireless network will have its own ESSID and WEP settings. If you control (I.E. you have the username and password for that router) the wireless router that you are settings up you control what the ESSID and WEP settings are. If you purchased the wireless router that you are trying to connect to, you might need a users guide for that router or if the company you get your Internet from owns your wireless router, you need to contact them concerning the setup of that wireless router.

    Hope that helps.
    Good Luck
