I have HP 510 note book. some keys, e.g. U, I, O, P, K etc are stuck in numbers. i cannot write a sentence. what should i do to make it function normally?

This is probably a software issue, I would reload the program you are typing with (e.g.Word) and try again OR it could be your palm resting on the touchpad causing this to happen, I always disable mine when typing (normally to do this you use the 'F' or function key (coloured blue or red etc) along with appropriate key on the top row.

if your "F" function keys are a second function of the keys they are on there will be a key, usally located in the area of the lower left corner of your keyboard. If the "F" functions are in color, so will the key that activates them. The idea is that you hold down the Fn key while striking the selected "F" key

Here's the Microsoft way - note that all Win7 keyboard shortcuts begin with CTRL-ALT-(your shortcut key here).

Note also that a desktop shortcut must already exist to which to be invoked by the keyboard shortcut.....

the use of a "hotkey." Keyboard macros can be as short as one
function key, but some Win7 function keys cannot be ove-written, such as F5

You have the Num Lock on.

To turn it off just hit the Num Lock key or press Fn and hit the Num Lock key to return the keyboard to normal.

The Function Keys, or F-Keys, are the keys on labelled F1 through F12 above the number keys.
NOTE: To use the programmed F-Key, make sure to toggle on Enhanced F Keys Mode by pressing the F Mode key. The F Mode LED on the receiver will be off in Enhanced F Keys Mode.
Similar to the Programmable Keys, the F-Keys can also be programmed to perform certain functions.

1. Click the My Keyboard tab on the top of the screen and select the Keyboard F Key Settings tab on the left.
   
2. Select the F key you wish to customize.
   
3. Now select the task you want the button to perform under Select Task. You can also click Help to find detailed descriptions of these options.
   
4. Click on Apply then click on OK to close SetPoint.
   

You need to get into your SETUP routine and enable NUMPAD function
