Metal sleeve Hi Thanks for detailed advice. Actually one of the metal sleeves has come out larger than the other one and is not going back inside. My flash light views do not show anything. There is no particles put by child and no cd and there appears to be no breakage. With these details can you help? Many thanks

3.5" FLOPPY DISKETTE
Below we have represented a picture of the now commonly used 3.5" floppy diskettes. The below representation is what the back of a floppy diskette looks like. As you can see there are four main visible parts:
metal sleeve - floppyd.gif First, the top left of the back of the floppy there is a small tab. This tab enables the floppy disk to be switched from write protected and un-write protected. Move the tab to the top position, creating a hole, makes the disk write protected. This means that nothing can be written, erased or deleted from the diskette. Moving the tab to the bottom position allows the disk to be un-write protected, which means the diskette can be written too, erased, and or have information deleted from the diskette. Some diskettes, which are generally cheaper diskettes, will be missing this tab. To write information to the diskette you will have to place a piece of scotch tape over the hole.
Second, the top right hand of the back of the floppy you will notice a small hole. This tells the computer if the diskette within the computer is a High Density diskette.
Third, you will notice the circular metal disk in the middle of the floppy diskette. This is used to rotate the magnetic medium within the floppy disk casing.
Fourth, you will see a metal door which can be moved left and then will snap back to its original position. This door is used to allow the read/write head within the floppy drive to have the capability of accessing the magnetic medium within the casing. Once the diskette is removed, this door will snap back into position, helping to prevent anything from getting on the magnetic medium and destroying it.
5 1/4" FLOPPY DISKETTE
Below is a representation of a 5 1/4" floppy commonly used in 1980's and is generally no longer used today. The 5 1/4" floppy diskette was really floppy (flimsy) when compared to the 3.5" floppy diskette.
As you can notice in the above illustration, the 5 1/4" floppy does not have many involved components. First, you will notice the Write protection tab which would be present if the diskette allowed information to be written to it. Placing a piece of tape over the hole or if the hole was not present would make the diskette write protected.
Second, you should notice the large hole in the center of the floppy diskette. This hole allowed the platter within the floppy to be rotated allowing the information to be read from the write access hole.
Third, you should notice the Index hole, this hole was the computer's way of knowing where the starting point of the sector was on the diskette by physically having a hole punched in the film disc within the plastic casing.
Finally, you should notice the write access hole. This is the location which information would be read from as the disc within would rotate. However, because there was no protection like that found on the 3.5" floppy diskette, the 5 1/4" floppy diskette was generally protected by placing it within a protective sleeve.

My notepad is switching on fine, but the screen is very faint (dark) i'm trying to find out whether its the backing bulb or the FL inverter. Need advice?

Hi Danny,
Either of the parts can be faulty or in some rare cases both. In most of such cases (HP-Compaq) that I received for repair, it was Invertor. Inspect the Invertor for any apparant physical damages (burnt coil or circuit components etc). Inverter can be checked by disconnecting the present CCFL and connecting a fresh/ working CCFL (Backlight) before actually removing the CCFL as it is difficult and unnecessary to take it out if its not the fault.

So, my advice is that you check the LCD display for replacement of Inverter . I have found a general link about CCFL replacement. Click here for detailed and graphical DIY instructions about LCD disassembly.
Make sure you take proper precaution while working inside LCD, as the inverter generates a very high voltage.
IF YOU ARE NOT EXPERIENCED WITH WORKING INSIDE SUCH ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS, I SUGGEST THAT YOU SEEK PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANCE FROM AUTHORISED SERVICE/ REPAIR CENTER FOR REPLACEMENT OF CCFL OR INVERTER.

Hope it helps! Good Luck!

I have an Acer laptop, but my dvd rom drive does not appear in the My Computer folder and in that case I cannot use it to open Cd or Dvd. I need help to solve this problem. Thanks.

It's actually a manufacturing problem. The dvd metal case atually touches the the interior metal case of the laptop causing a shortcircuit. Solution: Remove The DVD drive from its place by removing the screw of the drive from the back of laptop and then pull the drive gently out from the laptop case. At the end of DVD case you can see the metalic extension, with a little hole. Cover that entire area with something, i used a sticker, but let that hole free, so you can put the screw back in once you put the DVD drive back in to the laptop case. That's it. If your DVD drive has no other defects, it should work

How to repair laptop key

If your keys fell off from your keyboard, you can easily repair it by following the installation guide below.

You should have a key cap, one large and one small plastic pieces (retainer clips).

Take the larger plastic piece, it must have two larger sticks at either sides that are going to click onto the larger metal hooks on the keyboard.

Take the small plastic piece. It must have a small bar on one side that is going to click onto the smaller single metal hook on the keyboard.

Place the smaller piece on the larger piece and insert its sticks to the holes of larger piece. Make it one piece.

Put the plastic piece into the metal holes on the keyboard. Push it evenly to insert completely. Get a thin object or blade and stretch the plastic pieces so that it clicks together.

Take your letter key, put it in the middle and push down evenly from all four sides.

That's all.

first start by downgrading to windows xp,then only upgrade you ram to 1gb then go to control panel and uninstall all the unnessacary files.

windows vista is generally a very slow program because it uses alot of space,xp is going to improve your speed and also dont load office 2007,rather load office 2003 its smaller and faster.

Gateway lap top is not getting any power, the power light is off any solutions?

1. First of all, go to http://is.gd/scG3/gateway/support and enter your serial number to make sure you still have warranty (just in case you need to order parts or send in your lappy) 2. You can open a chat window with gateway to describe to them your issue 3. Possibly order a new part, or fix the solution via gateway support.
ps. My suggestion is either a bad power cable, or bad battery. They will probably send you a new one of either for free if you still have time left on your warranty. Otherwise you'll have to pay, but it'll fix the issue. If you have any further questions, reply to turner.micah@gmail.com.

Hard Disk upgrade

Figured this out...
1)  Flip laptop over, keep front of laptop closest to you and hinges away from you 2)  Remove cover with cylinder/harddrive icon (2 screws) 3)  Remove small single silver screw near the front (close to you) of the laptop in the center of the metal harddrive caddy (the caddy may hold one or two hard drives) 4)  Pull the plastic tab on the left toward the outside of the laptop... the whole caddy with harddrive(s) inside will shift to the left, disconnecting it from the motherboard and lining up the caddy for removal. 5)  Lift the entire bracket straight up
To remove the primary harddrive (the only one present in my model) you must remove the blue L-shaped circuit board from the caddy. 1)  Flip the caddy over 2)  Remove the three screws with slightly larger head diameters around the perimiter of the caddy 3)  Push/slide/jiggle the circuit board so the sata connectors release from the hard drive(s). 4)  Unscrew the hard drive from the caddy

Hard Drive Replacement

there are normally 2 panels underneath the notebook, you need to remove one or the other, normally the right hand side and then remove a protection plate and you will see the hard drive located in a metal sleeve holder, althogh you may need to remove the battery and the heatsink fan to get at the hard disk cradle. Simply slide the cradle away from the motherboard and the HDD should slide out.
