When I press my cup against the button to dispense ice, everything works fine except the little flap doesn't open to dispense the ice; it just fills up in the door area where the ice is dispensed. I looked up in the opening from the outside of the door and to me it looked like some kind of arm or level might have been missing from the flap. Again, the ice is being dispensed just fine, except the flap doesn't open and the ice just backs up in the door.

SOURCE: LG LFX29560 Ice Dispenser

You may need a service call as the ice dispenser flap is operated by a solenoid which is controlled by a small pwb board which is located by the dispenser.

SOURCE: Ice and Water not dispensing. Light button not working

http://www.repairclinic.com/0100_1.asp
There's an ice- or water-dispensing problem The ice and water-dispensing system of your refrigerator is quite complex. Many components work together to provide the ice and water. Aside from a simple problem of a leaky water tube or a jammed ice chute, most other components are not user serviceable. We suggest that you contact a qualified appliance repair technician for such repairs.

SOURCE: the flap on my water

check closely the flap. see if the spring pulling it to close shut is still ok. check the seal of the flap. that seal should not be broke or chipping. it should seal tight to the plastic where it is seating.

if there is even a small opening, frost would accumulate because of the air coming in from the damage flap. this frost would accumulate until the flap itself would no longer seal the opening.

Kristen,
Thank you for giving more information. I believe you will need to replace the flapper on the ice dispenser. I based this answer on the following: you mentioned when the door is held open ice comes out. Let me know if this helps. As you may know, there are several different things that could cause this issue, but this is the most common one of them. Here is a how to video on this type of repair:

Why won't my ice maker work

Hello Cynthia! Most likely the little "flap" inside the door of the dispenser is not closing all the way. My advice is to take all your ice out of the inside of the freezer. Clean and dry out that area as good as you can. Take your hand, and from the bottom, reach up and feel the flap that should close all the way when ice or water is dispensed. Take warm water, pour it from the top, you won't need much, and dry off the little flap as good as can be.
Now, press the ice button, and when you let go, you should hear a clunk or deep sounding slap, that is from the flap closing properly. Same goes for the water. However some manufacturers don't open the flap for water. From this point forward, assuming you heard the flap close, be sure it makes that same noise every single time you use the ice dispenser, or the water dispenser, and your problem should be solved.

Frigidaire galaxy series makes ice but won't dispense

If nothing at all happens then check the micro switch on the lever/button section. This will probably require taking the dispenser section off. If nothing at all is happening its as though it doesn't register the dispense, if the switch worked then at least something would happen ie the flap, the drive motor etc

Ice dispensor only dispensing crushed ice - not cubed

Make sure that your ice tray is properly instaled. There is a rod that must go into a hole. When you select ice cubes rather than crushed ice a solenoid raises which moves that rod. It then opens a flap so the cubes can bypass the crusher. Either your rod is not in the hole correctly or the solenoid has gone bad. The rod that I am speaking of runs along the underside of the ice tray. It has a spring on the rear end that holds the bypass flpa closed.

Ice maker will only dispense crushed ice

You may have a broken solenoid inside the motor assembly.  The solenoid controls the arm for cubed or crushed ice.  The only way to tell is remove the ice dispenser motor assembly and look at the solenoid.  If the solenoid is broken, replace it and everything should be ok.

No water or ice through door

sounds like the dispenser assembly is not sensing that the trap door is opening fully, so it wont send power to the auger motor or fill valve. If you are pretty handy, you can disassemble the door and take out the dispenser assembly and try to take the assembly apart and correct the throw on the trap door. Otherwise, I'm afraid you need a new dispenser to the tune of about $250 parts and $225 trip and labor. Good luck!
