Hi,

The red light indicates that the Akai is receiving power. Normally, if a fault has developed and detected by the built-in protection circuitry, on power up, the same red light would blink as an indication of fault. The number of blinks would point to a probable fault where further diagnosis could be initiated. This then would require familiarity with electronic components and circuitry, use of a DVM and possibly a soldering iron as well as safe practices when repairing electrical electronic devices. Access to a service manual or at the very least a schematic diagram with voltage readings is a necessity. Should you be uncomfortable, thne your best bet may be to seek the services of a qualified professional.

There are instances where the unit will not continue powering up if it detects the absence of any usable signal, cable or video.

If you are considering a DIY, foremost to check would be the standyby +5 VDC for the logic/controller circuitry. This would be in the power supply board and is always hot/on whenever the unit is plugged to the mains. The +5 s powers the remote receiver and the controller board as said. It turns the unit on by giving a go signal for the other parts of the power supply to kick in to supple the rest of the other boards.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Try connecting to different power source and turn it on if this did not work then there is the problem with PCB board and

If you would like to attempt a DIY, you will need a service manual to guide you. You can find one here:http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/

Unplug power cable for 5 minutes and connect it back , in some case this clear the error, most likely it is a blown component on PCB board.
If hard reset does not work you will have to take the monitor to a local repair shop, or to call the phone number printed on user manual to arrange repair.

The light never changes to green or flashes, correct? The first source to look into for a problem is the power supply then. Make sure you unplug the tv and wait 8 hours to let it discharge especially if you don't usually work with electronics

let me know of any further questions that you have

Please provide information to answer my previous questions. This is most likely not going to be an easy fix but if the light never changed colors or never blinked (or did do one of these things), please let me know. Most likely the power supply module will have to be replaced.

    I
figured out that if i unplug the set then plug it back in it worked. We
did that for about 2 weeks. Then one day nothing, no matter how long I
    left it unplugged.

My tv is 18mos. old out of warranty and Polaroid refuses to do anything
about. I am extremely upset because I know that this is a manufacturing defect.

This may or may not work for other Polaroid models I have no idea. Here is a picture of my info.

Anyway here is how i fixed my set.

    Total parts cost $5.12

This has worked for me, I am no technician so I can't say that it will work for you. Click here for information on caps. Or here

If you try this it is at your own risk!

    Defective Parts:2 CapXon 1000uf 10v caps.

Replaced Parts:2 Off brand 1000uf 16v caps. (the closest match my local supplier had.)

Once unplugged and flipped over I removed these three screws to access the control box.

Carefully pry up and pull back on the vented cover.

With the cover off I removed 3 more screws and again carefully pryed up on the control box cover to expose the inside.

Circled is the location of the bad caps. (This is an after picture. I didn't take any pictures of the caps still on the board.)

Press your index finger over the tops of the 2 caps and feel for a bulge. Good caps should be sunken in. Bad caps ballooned.

    These are mine removed

    In order to de-solder
your caps you must unplug all connectors and remove the 4 screws
holding down the board. Be very careful!, and only touch the sides of
the board. Wear an anti-static band also.

Once removed pull of the plastic shield underneath the board. Be careful and save it, YOU MUST PUT IT BACK.

Carefully de-solder the old caps. Replace with new caps.

Note the polarity This is very important! On the board look for the + sign. That is your positive. The longer lead should go here. Take your time and verify This step.

(sorry no pics on the cap removal and install I wasn't positive that this would work so I didn't think about taking any.)

Reverse the procedure to put your set back together.

Now plug it up and hope it works for another year!

The remote control will not operate the TV when the TV is in the OFF mode (No LED lit on front bezel). To change the mode from OFF to STANDBY or ON, press the POWER button on the side of the TV. Once the POWER button is pressed, the LED will change to either red to indicate STANDBY or green to indicate ON, whichever mode the TV was in prior to being turned off with the TV POWER button.

By pressing the POWER button on the side of the TV, the mode will toggle from OFF to either STANDBY or ON. If the POWER button is pressed and then the LED on the bezel is red, the TV is in STANDBY mode and will need to be turned on using the remote control. If the POWER button is pressed and then the LED on the bezel is green, the TV is ON.

Screen seems to stay on after powering off...

stand by should be when the power button turns red. There is also an off mode but it requires you to use the button on the front of the tv. Only problem with this is the remote doesn't work when the tv is in the off mode.
