The most-common cause is a computer-virus that DELIBERATELY has "hidden" those icons.

Take your computer to a computer-store, and get them to remove the disk-drive from your computer, attach it as a "slave" disk-drive in one of their computers, and then run a "deep" virus-scan of your disk-drive, to "clean" your files.

My mac book pro now has two safari icons. one on the dock and one on the screen. i can't get rid of one of them, please help.

If you want to get rid of the Safari icon on your dock:
just click on the Safari icon and drag it away from the dock, then let go of the icon.
It should just disappear.

If you want to get rid of the Safari icon on your screen (I'm assuming on your desktop):
-open a new Finder window (Finder> New Window)
-click on the Safari icon on your desktop and drag it to the Finder window, where it says "Applications", then let go of the icon
- it should disappear from your desktop

Why did the icons desappeared?

There are reasons why the icons of your computer disappeared.

1. It could have been hidden if the "Show Desktop Icons" has been disabled.

You can check the settings when you right click on your desktop, and select arrange icons by.

2. Or the virus could have modified your registry settings so the icons disappeared.

"My Handheld PC" and "Recycle Bin" icons disappeared

This problem is experienced after following performance suggestions found in third-party documentation, on web sites, or in newsgroups. These suggestions instruct users to remove all folders from the desktop of Handheld PC Pro device in order to speed screen-repaint rates. Applying these same steps on a Handheld PC 2000 device causes all desktop icons to disappear. Microsoft has documented this issue (in Q289674): http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q289/6/74.ASP To restore the My Handheld PC and Recycle Bin icons on the device, follow these steps: 1. Tap Start, tap Programs, and then tap Windows Explorer. 2. Tap the My Documents folder, tap Send To on the File menu, and then tap Desktop as Shortcut. 3. "Soft" reset the MobilePro. The My Handheld PC and Recycle Bin icons should return to the desktop. Note that you must have at least one folder or shortcut on the desktop in addition to the My Handheld PC and Recycle Bin icons, or else the problem will recur.
