Question about Garmin eTrex Legend GPS Receiver

Unit decides to display a thin vertical line randomly

You have to pull the batteries out to get it reset.

Apparenly this is a known problem with the GPS 72, but I've not seen anyone else with the problem on the Legend.

    My unit is displaying thin vertical lines also (e Trex Legend) somewhat randomly. I am now losing the ability to read the screen at times when the lines get bad.

Try updating your unit software via Garmin.com. The US launched a new satellite earlier this year, causing problems with WAAS. You can disable WAAS as a temporary fix but updating your unit's software should provide a permanent fix. Let us know if this solves your problem.

Lines on display, numerous horizontal, 3 vertical


This problem is caused by a defective LCD display. It is a common problem too. The only way to repair it is to replace the LCD display.

Turned on now has coloured lines vertical down right side and wont turn of


Re-set the device using a long thin point (ideally plastic) inserted in the small hole in the unit base.
and/or let it run flat, then re-charge it and switch it on again. hopefully the problem will have cleared.
This all assumes you have not physically damaged the unit through untoward pressure on screen, dropping etc.

My gps72 just started going off and a thin vertical line appears on the screen. the onl way I can get to come back on is to remove one of the batteries and then it will turn on again and the problem starts...


You need to update the software version to 2.50. You will need a data cable that connects to a serial port on a computer. Be sure to have fresh batteries in the unit and set it to simulator mode when you turn it on and then update. The update is on garmins website.

Blank Screen on Garmin E-Trex Vista


The problem is that your software version needs updating. A recently added satellite creates a glitch in the older software. Go to the Garmin website, load WebUpdater if you haven't already done so, and the updated version (3.8) will automatically install to your Garmin unit. I had the same symptoms, they have now disappeared and my Etrex Vista is back to normal.

I have run into the same problem and it may be related to the WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) feature. Try disabling this feature (under MAIN MENU / Setup). I used this receiver overseas (Asia and Europe) last year for 35 days straight with no problems. During this time WAAS was disabled as none of these satellites are visible overseas. The problem occurred intermittently prior to the overseas trip, and has reoccurred after returning. I was running into the same problem this past weekend and noticed the screen blanking out (with the vertical line) shortly after differential corrections were applied to the GPS signals. I disabled the WAAS and let the receiver run for over an hour. The problem did not return. Hope this helps.

GPS V plus. Screen goes blank except for one thin horizontal line. Unit becomes unresponsive. Have to pull the batteries. After that the unit restarts and resumes working as if nothing had happened.


According to Garmin Tech:
01) Power unit ON
02) Press ENTER until you get past all the warning screens
03) Press MENU twice
04) Go to SETUP
05) Under the SYSTEM tab, goto lower right box labeled WAAS
06) Disable the WAAS

I had the same problem with an etrex Vista. I spoke with Garmin, they said that a recently launched WAAS satellite is interferring with some models (he mentioned it is the models with a black and white screen). Garmin tech support said that they're working on a software patch but for the meantime switch WAAS off.

Navigation screen freezes GPS unit


I believe they fixed this problem with a firmware upgrade. Use Garmin's web updater to perform the updates.
