I might mean that your computer is overheated, or you burned the hard drive. Try contacting the manufacturer they might have some more information for you.

Hope this helps!

Zoom on desktop

Try Right Clicking on a empty space on the desktop and select Properties. Click the Settings Tab and go change the screen resolution. The higher the resolution, the smaller the icons. Normal resolution is about 1024x768, but you can make the icons even smaller by increasing the resolution.

If you can't get into the screen resolution that way, turn off the computer and boot up into safe mode.

Turn off the computer, then hit the power button to turn it back on and immediately start hitting the F8 key repeatedly until you see SAFE MODE. Take the Safe Mode option and let it boot up. Safe Mode will look different to you, the screen will be darker and the icons bigger, this is normal.

When the computer boots up click Start/Control Panel or Start/Settings Control Panel and look for Desktop or Appearance and Personalization.
Look for Screen Resolution or open the desktop and click the Settings tab. Make the resolution higher to make the icons smaller. Normal is 1024x768 but you can make it higher.

In Windows 7 just click Start and in the search box type: Screen Resolution. Look up at the top for the returned search results and click on Screen Resolution. Go in and set the resolution higher.

After you change the resolution reboot and let windows go into it's normal boot up mode.

When i start up the laptop. the screen flashes continouosly for a good 5 minutes

Does it boot up? Are you able to use it after 5 minutes? What does the flashing look like? Is it flashing the boot up posting processes?

Have you tried booting up in Safe Mode and see if it flashes for 5 minutes?

If your laptop won't boot up again until it has cooled down, then the problem is a faulty fan and or dust clogging the fan and heatsink fins. The CPU overheats and shuts down (thermal overload) and if this problem is not then eventually the CPU will fail.
Check the fan and if it does not spin freely then it needs replacing.
If the fan and heatsink assembly is clogged with dust, then remove the dust.

Acer 5515 on external monitor

Get an VGA cable and connect your external monitor to your laptop via a VGA port that is usually used for digital projectors. In this VGA port, you can initiate dual monitors.

Then look at your keyboard and look an icon in your function keys (F1 to F12) that looks like a pair of an LCD and a TV like this {LCD icon/ TV icon}. In most laptop keyboards, this is located in F4.

When found, and with the external monitor hooked to the laptop via VGA port using a VGA cable, press and hold down the FN key and press the function key where the icons described above is located. Example, FN + F4 to toggle a single and a dual monitor.

Give it a try.

Tried the solution...Satellite A85 desktop with no iocons or task

freetek suggested booting to Safe Mode and using Restore function; did a restore to earlier than when problem started, and it worked! However, the nesxt day when I started the laptop again, it returned to the Desktop with no icons or taskbar, causing me to have to remove battery to shut down system. Tried a second Restore to a same checkpoint...would not allow me to re-use that previously used checkpoint, so went one week further back. Did not work and all laptop will do is boot top Desktop with no icons or taskbar and I have to remove the battery to turn it off.
