The transmission is probably a 4L60E or 4L65E the third and forth clutches and steel are probably burnt out or the clutch piston has blown it's seals very common on those transmissions.

Or i could be a number of OTHER things besides the tranny... it could be shift solenoids(replace em both if ya replace em) it could be the shift cable needs tightening, it could be a shift sensor... Best way to kno is take it to a parts store and have em hook it up to a diagnosis computer and get the codes to see what the problem is...most places do thatr for free in hope that you buy the parts from them.

My 2002 chevy avalanch wont shift into 3rd or 4rth

1- You have to check the transmission oil level.
(Engine running in the park or neutral. )
2- Retrieve transmission trouble code with a scanner.
3- Depends on what code you have
4- Find out if your problem is electrical or mechanical or hydraulic.
5- It could be the 3-4 solenoid, 3-4 shift valve stuck inside valve body..........and so on.
6- At the cluster display the PRNDL display all lights state = on. If not the PRNDL switch on the side of transmission water intrusion.
I believe you need a good Technician if you don't find it.
There are so many things.

Hope it helps.

97 Chevy Tahoe code Po 758

This is from Repair Pal...just Google your code (P0758) to find other helpful suggestions

OBD-II Code P0758 is defined as a Shift Solenoid B Electrical The purpose of the automatic transmission is to match the engine's optimum power and torque characteristics to the driver's desired rate of acceleration and speed by auto-selecting different gear ratios or 'speeds' to power the wheels. Shift solenoid B enables the transmission to shift from 2nd gear to 3rd gear. It does this by re-directing the flow of the transmission fluid which changes the position of the shift valves in the valve body.
When the code P0758 is set in the Powertrain Computer, it means that the Powertrain Computer or PCM is not seeing the specified rpm change that occurs during a shift from 2nd gear to 3rd gear. It's also not seeing the correct increase in road speed from the vehicle speed sensor.

P0758 Symptoms
  • Check Engine Light will illuminate
  • Vehicle will not shift from 2nd gear to 3rd gear properly
  • Decrease in fuel economy
  • In unusual cases, there are no adverse conditions noticed by the driver
  • In some cases, there may be performance problems and possibly misfire-like symptoms
Common Problems That Trigger the P0758 Code
  • Defective Shift Solenoid
  • Defective Shift Solenoid wiring or connector
  • Defective Valve Body
  • Dirty transmission fluid that restricts the hydraulic passages

I have a 97 Chevy tahoe and the auto transmission switches fine from 1st to 2nd but when it goes to switch to 3rd, then it goes into a neutral like mode and the rpms shoot up. Could it be a solenoid or 3rd...

It could be either. It could also be a result of sticking valve body spool valves. You need to scan your Powertrain Control Module for fault codes. If there is an electrical problem with a solenoid or a solenoid circuit, then there will be a CIRCUIT fault code present. If it is being caused by worn-out clutches or sticking valve body valves, there wil be "LONG SHIFT" or "MAXIMUM ADAPT" fault codes present, indicating a MECHANICAL problem. If thyere is a mechanical problem indicated, then pressure testing should be done. If there is an electrical fault indicated, then electrical diagnosis should be performed to locate the cause.

The torque converter clutch issue, won't effect the
shifting issues

I would stop using it,unless your prepared to
completely rebuild it, in a few weeks.

It has to be diagnosed and resolved, now, quickly.

Having once owned a trans shop, I don't like the
fact your driving it at all, hung shifts for 7 miles
will do it in

Gear shifting problem

The 1st thing to do is have a test run on the transmission control module to see if any trouble codes are present, next have you ever serviced the transmission, fluid and filter change, should be done at 60,000 miles, on occasion this can cure problems like yours.
