Sounds like sled motor [the motor that help to spin the disc inside] is faulty. This is purely a mechanical fault. Contact any service technician. The CD drive mechanism should be taken out from the device, for repair. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts. Backup the BluRay to my hard drive?

By backup Blu-ray my guess is in BDMV folder, right? All supported video formats of Windows Media Center are listed in here http://windows.microsoft.com/is-IS/windows7/File-types-supported-by-Windows-Media-Center, but no BDMV folder included. So you have to convert it to a supported format like .wmv, .avi, etc, and Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper I have used for couple of years may give you some help and they have a brief guide page to assist you. http://www.blu-ray-dvd-converter.com/guide/play-blu-ray-movie-in-windows-media-center-wmp.html

My dvd player says playback prohibited by area limitations

Sounds like it's the wrong region disc. Try a disc that worked before and if it does than there is nothing wrong with your dvd player it is the disc you are trying to play that has the issue.

Pioneer dvd player 410v freezes when I play avi files, then I have to turn it off at the main power to get the player running again.

I Guess your DVD Player doesn't support the avi format.
If doso, then with some limited audio/vedio rates.

You could read this CNET Review Here about the support.

Mysterious "ring" on burned DVD causes playback to freeze.

Is the image preponderantly encoded in PAL? Majority PAL and some NTSC? Or fully NTSC? Used transcoding presets? Transcoded project before you built to DVD? Note: Always run "TEST" before burning (to save plastic trees)? Determined whether system or project is faulty? Tested the DVD drive? Tried burning using another application? Closed all background-running resource hogs and applications? Did the project size increase the capacity size of the disk? Used a lower write speed? Disabled startup items and services? DMA: enabled? Updated Windows? Media compatibility? System requirements attained? Updated your application? Solved the issue(s); then write it down and share it with others. Still having issues? Revert back to the computer's factory settings and rebuild, upgrade, or invest in a high-end system and buy the full version of Nero 9, with all the plug-in features....and so forth. If time is money, the latter solution is your best bet. If money is an issue, then it requires trench warfare - that is, much research, deductive reasoning and time investment to isolate your specific problem...start by analyzing your source, and then your target...cause/effect relationship...you'll conquer all problems, eventually...political machinations aside. Dvd playback freezes or is choppy

Get a cleaning disk and run it through the machine. Could be a dirty lens on the laser.
