Vista vs XP

Can I get XP loaded on a new laptop if I purchase at Best Buy? Dell online is offering to load XP AND send CD for Vista 'when you are ready'.
Does BB offer any thing like that?

Best Buy will sell you a real Microsoft CD with the key. Geek Squad can install it for you and give you the cd as well.

All you've got to do is:

1) Insert the new hard drive.
2) Press the F8 key as the laptop boots. This will take you into the BIOS.
3) Locate the disk drive priority setting in the bios.
4) Set Priority 1 to your CD/DVD drive and priority 2 to the 320GB hard drive.
5) Save settings and exit the BIOS. This should reboot your laptop.
6) Insert the Windows XP CD.
7) It should not start the setup as it recognises the CD.
8) I will recommend that you format the drive before you install, go along with the format (make sure it does a full format).
9) After the format it will reboot your system.
10) You will be prompted with a message like "Press any key to boot form CD", DON'T press anything otherwise it will start all over again.
11) Now it should start the install. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Windows XP verses Vista

Windows XP is much more stable than Vista. You will also have to purchase more memory if you decide to go with Vista. So many people as for XP over Vista that Dell and HP have started offering it as a default option. As far as upgrading goes, it is pretty much inevitable that at some point you will have to upgrade your Operating System. Windows 7 is the next one coming out.

Hope this helps. If you have further questions feel free to reply.

You need To purchase a windows XP setup install disk and serial, and boot from CD, performing a new windows installation.

Then you download drivers from Dell website.

Post the exact model for your laptop

Yes. Purchasing a Vista install disc is exactly what you need to do. Install Vista from the disc, then go to the link bellow, download any needed drivers, and you're good to go.

Looking to buy a new laptop

Many places are now offering a choice between XP and Vista for their machines. They are finding that Vista only has taken a bite out of their sales. If you find the machine you want, but it's not offered with XP, you can change the operating system fairly easy. Just about all the major manufacturers are offering drivers for XP at their support sites. They too have figured out that Vista isn't quite what they said it was, and now know it was a mistake not to offer the drivers. In my opinion as far as offering equal support for both XP and Vista for their machines, Dell is on top and by far the easiest to use, then IBM/Lenovo, Gateway, Toshiba, Sony, then Acer. HP/Compaq still has their head up their ***. You can find drivers for XP if you know the make and model of the components, ie... sound card, video card, and wireless card, if you don't know the make and model you will have to take the machine apart to get them. You will not be able to find the drivers at HP's support site, because if the machine was designed for Vista, then only Vista drivers will be found there. Not to mention that they have the most fragile motherboard on the market.
So, let's recap, BUY a: Dell, IBM/Lenovo, Toshiba, Gateway, Sony, Acer is cheaply made and has a few bugs, especially with their web cam, so think twice, and DO NOT buy an HP/Compaq. Hope this helps and happy shopping!!!

Updating a printer with Vista.

Hp has a new driver package available from its website. However, it's best to install the basic printer driver under vista, as the software package does not work properly (even though it says it's for vista).

No 3d acceleration in Vista on ATI 7500

Well, I'm amazed a C640 runs Vista at all. There's no reason to buy a new hard drive, except for the novenlty of having one loaded with Vista on a C640. It's a great laptop, and runs Windows XP PRo perfectly well. If you have one od the Dell XP install disks, just boot from it, and whenever it finds the vista install, hit excape, then at the next screen hit "D" to delete the partition, then choose "quick format", and load the Operation system. If you need an install disk, let me know. Good luck
