Fuel from the fuel tank flows to the carburetor and then on into the engine cylinders. From there it seeps into the crank case.
It's a matter of gravity. The gas will seep until it reaches the lowest point in the engine.
There are two methods of correcting this dangerous problem.
1) When you are done using the engine you can turn it upside down, over a large container that is of sufficient size to contain all the gas and oil that will run out of the engine.
2) Turn the fuel valve to it's OFF position when you are done running the engine. This stops the fuel from seeping into the crank case from the carburetor.
(And a heads up from one who has personal, first hand experience. Be sure to OPEN the fuel shut off valve when you think you would like to start the engine.)
If you should have this happen again DO NOT try to start the engine!
(That's one of the reasons The Da always said, "Did you check the oil before you started that engine?")
Dump out all of the oil that has been contaminated with fuel and replace it with fresh oil.
After gas is in the carb will it run continuous or just for a brief second?
If it just runs for a brief second as it burns up the gas you poured in it then the small jet on the carburetor is clogged, Pull off the Gas bowl and clean it Then write your Congressman and tell him to get rid of the Ethanol Gas law. Ethanol is killing carburetors
by any chance welder has set for a while, or maybe got water in feul , simply drain carb, drain located at bottom of feul bowl, notice if water comes out ,its normal to get a little water thru years of use , try to drtain in container if possible, replace feul filter , and try to clean feul bowl out best you can , give it a try
Get a can of carburetor cleaner. Drain the gas. Mix small quantity of fresh gas & carb cleaner about 50/50. Run a little through (it might not start, but crank it enough to get some solution through the carb.) If it runs, that's great, run about half of your solution then turn it off for an hour. Then run the rest through. If it won't start, then after the hour add a bit of fresh gas to make the remaining solution about 90% gas and run this through
By the way, running the carb cleaner through the air intake will not fix this problem, because the gumming of gas is in the fuel line, float valve, needle valve - not in the air stream. Running carb cleaner through the air intake is useful if the throttle is sticking..

Don't leave gas in the tank, or add additive to gas >>> you know that but the next reader might not know.
If you are able to get washer running by spraying WD-40 or some other accelerant directly into carburetor but engine will not continue running ... there are 3 suspects: 1) dirty air filter 2) the exhaust port is clogged with carbon, dirt, etc 3) the carburetor has given out or no gas is getting to carburetor
2) Check exhaust port >>> we finally broke the screen out with a screwdriver so it wouldn't bother us any more 3) Carburetor ... you have spark but the gas is either not getting to carburetor or carburetor is not letting gas in. Pull off rubber line going to carburetor and see if gas flows out. If gas gets to carburetor and all the conditions above are met, then the carburetor needs gum out or rebuilding or replacement
Have you tried pouring a little fuel into the plug hole and try for start? If it runs for a short time, you have fuel delivery problems. Check the fuel filter for plugging. Look under the carburetor bowl for a small solenoid that commonly sticks in one position. I'm not aware of an automatic compression release on these engines. As this is a 4-stroke engine, it's possible that one of the valve clearances has closed up during use. Check this with the piston at top-dead-center on the compression stroke. Hope some of this helps!
Hi John, I am Kelly and welcome to FixYa.
Check the inside of the gas tank and see if there is a fuel pick up tube. This sounds like you have a floating vs sunken pick up tube inside the gas tank.
The next time it quits on you; pull off the main fuel line at the gas tank and see if there is MAX fuel available. If not the problem is in the tank.
- If you do have MAX fuel flow we have other troubleshooting to do that I will post about later.
I will keep watching this post for any responses because I don't think that is the problem but the gas tank has to be eliminated first.
